India Launches Hydrogen-Powered Transport Pilot Projects
The Indian government has taken a significant step towards sustainable transportation by initiating five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects will utilize hydrogen as fuel in buses and trucks, marking a pivotal move in the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy. With a total investment of approximately Rs. 208 crore, the pilot projects are expected to be operational within the next 18 to 24 months.
Details of the Pilot Projects
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has approved five pilot projects that will deploy a total of 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles, including 15 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles. These vehicles will operate on ten designated routes across India, including major corridors such as Greater Noida to Delhi, Bhubaneshwar to Puri, and Pune to Mumbai. Additionally, nine hydrogen refueling stations will be established to support these vehicles, ensuring a robust infrastructure for hydrogen fuel. Major companies involved in these projects include TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and Ashok Leyland, among others.
Financial Support and Objectives
The Indian government has allocated around Rs. 208 crore to support the selected pilot projects. This funding aims to foster the development of commercially viable hydrogen technologies in the transport sector. The primary objective is to demonstrate the safe and effective use of hydrogen as a fuel source in real-world conditions. By validating the performance and economic viability of hydrogen-based vehicles and refueling stations, the government hopes to pave the way for broader adoption of hydrogen technology in the future.
Significance of the National Green Hydrogen Mission
Launched on January 4, 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission has an ambitious outlay of Rs. 19,744 crores, extending until the fiscal year 2029-30. This initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to achieve self-reliance through clean energy solutions. The mission aims to significantly decarbonize the economy, reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a leader in green hydrogen technology. By promoting hydrogen as a viable fuel alternative, the government is taking crucial steps towards a sustainable energy future.
