India Launches AI Initiatives to Boost Innovation

The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has unveiled a series of groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, coinciding with the first anniversary of the IndiaAI Mission on March 7. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw introduced the India AI Compute Portal, designed to provide accessible and affordable AI computing resources. Additionally, the AIKosha platform was launched, serving as a comprehensive online repository for datasets and AI models, aimed at fostering innovation in the AI sector.

MeitY Unveils Key AI Initiatives

During a recent event in New Delhi, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the launch of two significant platforms: AIKosha and the AI Compute Portal. AIKosha is a secure online repository that offers a wealth of datasets, AI models, and practical use cases to stimulate AI innovation. This platform also includes a sandbox environment, along with tools and tutorials, enabling developers to test and deploy their AI models effectively.

The AI Compute Portal is tailored to provide businesses and developers with affordable AI processing capabilities, including network and storage facilities. Vaishnaw emphasized that these initiatives will significantly enhance AI research and innovation across India. Initially, the portal will offer access to 10,000 GPUs, with plans to expand this number by adding an additional 8,693 GPUs in the future. The platform aims to deliver computing services at subsidized rates, specifically targeting eligible startups, researchers, and enterprises.

Moreover, Vaishnaw highlighted the digital public infrastructure (DPI) framework for AI, which ensures that the datasets available on AIKosha are ethically sourced and content-focused. This approach aims to reduce dependence on synthetic and foreign data. Currently, AIKosha hosts over 300 datasets and more than 80 AI models, providing a robust foundation for AI development in India.

New Programs to Enhance AI Competency

In addition to the AIKosha and AI Compute Portal, the Indian government has introduced the AI Competency Framework, aimed at enhancing the AI skills of public sector officials. This initiative includes the launch of iGOT-AI, an AI-driven personalized learning system designed to deliver educational content through the iGOT Karmayogi platform. This system will help government officials acquire essential AI competencies, thereby improving their effectiveness in various roles.

Furthermore, the IndiaAI Mission has partnered with the French startup incubator Station F and HEC Paris to launch an acceleration program for Indian AI startups. This four-month program will begin with an online phase, followed by three months of onsite training at Station F in Paris. The initiative aims to provide ten selected AI startups with mentorship, networking opportunities, and pathways for global market expansion in Europe.

To support educational initiatives, the government has allocated a fund of 10,300 crores for the IndiaAI FutureSkills Fellowship. This fellowship is designed to lower barriers to entry into AI programs and will increase the availability of AI courses at undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. levels. The fellowship is currently being distributed to students from various centrally funded institutes, as well as other government and private academic institutions.

Establishing Data Labs Across India

In a bid to strengthen AI education, IndiaAI is establishing Data Labs in tier 2 and tier 3 cities across the country. These labs will focus on providing foundational courses in data science, catering to the growing demand for skilled professionals in this field. IndiaAI has already developed two specialized courses aimed at training Data Annotators and Data Curators, with a focus on sectors such as healthcare, education, and manufacturing.

These initiatives reflect India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in AI technology and innovation. By enhancing access to resources, education, and support for startups, the government aims to create a thriving ecosystem for AI development that benefits a wide range of sectors and communities across the nation.
