India Invests Rs. 2,000 Crore for Nationwide EV Charging Stations
The Indian government has announced a significant investment of Rs. 2,000 crore under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme. This initiative aims to establish a robust public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure throughout India, particularly targeting metropolitan areas, smart cities, and major urban centers.
Under this comprehensive scheme, various entities, including government ministries, central public sector enterprises (CPSEs), and state and union territory departments, can propose installations for Electric Vehicle Public Charging Stations (EV PCS). These proposals are to be submitted to designated nodal agencies that will assess the demand for EV charging stations across different regions.
The scope of this scheme extends to various forms of charging infrastructure, such as battery swapping stations and battery charging stations. The investment encourages not only federal entities but also local public sector undertakings to play a role in the installation and operation of these vital facilities.
Capital Subsidies to Support Infrastructure Development
To foster the growth of EV charging infrastructure, the PM E-DRIVE scheme offers capital subsidies for the development of upstream infrastructure and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), which includes charging units. Depending on the location category, subsidies can cover up to 100% of the costs, significantly encouraging more facilities to be developed.
On September 26, 2025, the operational guidelines for deploying this charging infrastructure were released. These guidelines highlight the priorities and criteria for expanding the electrification of transportation, especially in densely populated urban areas. Furthermore, the guidelines outline effective operational measures and continuous monitoring strategies to ensure the reliability and efficiency of charging stations.
This substantial funding initiative was communicated by the Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, during a recent session in the Rajya Sabha. The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing EV infrastructure as a critical component for promoting electric mobility and sustainable transportation.
The implementation of this scheme promises to transform India’s electric vehicle landscape, making it easier for consumers to access charging facilities. As the nation strides towards a greener future, this investment stands as a testament to India’s dedication to fostering electric mobility and reducing its carbon footprint.
