India Intensifies Fight Against Rising Cyber Fraud

Cyber fraud is surging in India, with over 1.1 million cases reported in 2024 alone. Among the most alarming trends are digital arrest scams, where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials to deceive vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly. In response, the Indian government is ramping up efforts to combat these scams and educate the public about the dangers of cyber fraud.
Government Takes Action Against Fraudulent Accounts
In a recent statement to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Shri Bandi Sanjay Kumar, revealed that the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has taken significant steps to curb cyber fraud. The I4C has successfully identified and blocked over 83,668 WhatsApp accounts linked to fraudulent activities, including digital arrest scams. Additionally, more than 3,962 Skype IDs associated with these scams have been disabled.
The government is not only focusing on blocking fraudulent accounts but also on raising awareness about digital scams. Initiatives include an unskippable caller tune message played on outgoing calls in various regional languages, targeted newspaper advertisements, and partnerships with social media influencers to spread the word. These efforts aim to inform the public about the tactics used by scammers and how to protect themselves.
Blocking SIM Cards and IMEI Numbers
As part of its comprehensive strategy, the government has blocked over 781,000 SIM cards and more than 208,000 IMEI numbers that were flagged by police authorities. This action is part of a broader collaboration with telecom service providers to establish a system that detects and blocks international calls from scammers using spoofed Indian phone numbers. These measures are crucial in preventing fraudsters from exploiting unsuspecting victims.
According to Minister Kumar, the I4C’s efforts have resulted in saving over โน4,386 crore by preventing funds from being siphoned off by scammers. The Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, established under the I4C in 2021, has received over 1.3 million complaints to date, highlighting the scale of the issue and the need for ongoing vigilance.
