India-EU Urban Forum: A Step Towards Sustainable Cities

The 4th India-EU Urban Forum took place today in New Delhi, marking a pivotal moment in the collaboration between India and the European Union (EU) on sustainable urban development. This forum builds on the 2017 Joint Declaration on Partnership for Smart and Sustainable Urbanization. It gathered officials and experts from India, the EU, and its Member States to discuss policies and share best practices aimed at fostering integrated approaches to urban sustainability. This high-level event aligns with the EU’s Global Gateway strategy in India, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in addressing urban challenges.

Key Themes of the Forum

The forum focused on three main themes: Urban Alliance and Integrated Approaches in Indian Cities, Promoting Innovation and Circularity at the City Level, and Inclusive Urban Mobility as a Social Enabler. Each theme addresses critical aspects of urban development.

The first theme, Urban Alliance, emphasizes the need for collaboration among various stakeholders, including government bodies, private sectors, and civil society. This collaboration is essential for creating integrated urban strategies that can effectively tackle the complexities of urbanization.

The second theme, Promoting Innovation and Circularity, highlights the importance of innovative solutions in urban planning. Circular economy principles can help cities minimize waste and make better use of resources. By adopting these principles, cities can become more resilient and sustainable.

Lastly, the theme of Inclusive Urban Mobility focuses on ensuring that all citizens have access to efficient and affordable transportation options. This is crucial for social equity and economic growth. By prioritizing inclusive mobility, cities can enhance the quality of life for their residents.

The Importance of EU-India Collaboration

Urban areas are responsible for two-thirds of global energy consumption, emissions, and pollution. Therefore, the collaboration between India and the EU is vital. Since 2017, this partnership has promoted sustainable city models, public-private investments, climate action, and disaster risk reduction. The Team Europe initiative has engaged with over 40 Indian municipalities, enhancing their understanding of climate-smart development.

H.E. Hervรฉ Delphin, the Ambassador of the EU to India, emphasized the significance of this collaboration. He stated that the EU has been actively supporting the Indian government’s urban planning efforts. With over โ‚ฌ45 million invested, the EU has leveraged more than โ‚ฌ1 billion to support sustainable urbanization initiatives. This commitment will continue through 2025-2027, reinforcing the EU’s dedication to fostering sustainable cities in India.

India’s Commitment to Urban Innovation

Shri Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, set the tone for the forum by highlighting India’s commitment to urban innovation. He noted that Indian cities are increasingly adopting smart solutions and building green infrastructure. These efforts aim to create sustainable urban environments for future generations.

Katikithala also stressed the importance of the India-EU partnership in addressing pressing climate challenges. He stated that both regions are working together to create sustainable cities that foster innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth. This collaborative approach is essential for navigating the evolving challenges and opportunities in urban development.

The forum served as a crucial step in shaping a unified strategy for India’s urban transformation. It reinforced the commitment of both India and the EU to drive smart, sustainable, and inclusive urban development, aligning with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ programs and missions.
