India Doubles R&D Spending, Fuels Innovation

India’s investment in research and development (R&D) has surged dramatically over the past decade, doubling from โน60,196 crore in 2013-14 to โน1,27,381 crore, according to Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. Speaking at the DISHA event at the India Habitat Centre, he emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a robust innovation ecosystem, particularly in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and quantum computing. This strategic focus aims to position India as a global leader in deep-tech innovation.
Government Initiatives Drive R&D Growth
Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the significant role of government-backed initiatives in catalyzing scientific advancements. He noted that the increased funding for R&D has not only bolstered India’s Gross Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD) but has also facilitated the transition of innovations from laboratories to industries. This approach is integral to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to make India self-reliant in various technological domains. The minister pointed out that the collaboration between academia, industry, and startups is crucial for creating an intellectual property-driven innovation ecosystem.
The DISHA Program, which stands for Developing Innovations, Successful Harnessing, and Adoption, is a key initiative aimed at fostering a knowledge-based economy. It supports faculty and students working on disruptive technologies across multiple disciplines, ensuring that India remains competitive in the global innovation landscape. Dr. Singh emphasized that such programs align with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), which aims to create a unified research ecosystem that bridges various fields of study.
Private Sector Participation in Strategic Fields
One of the pivotal changes discussed by Dr. Singh is the government’s policy shift to allow private sector participation in strategic areas such as space technology and nuclear research. This move is expected to accelerate technological advancements and enhance efficiency, making India more competitive on a global scale. The minister noted that the space sector has particularly benefited from this shift, with startups actively engaging in satellite development and launch services.
Furthermore, the opening of the nuclear energy sector to private enterprises is seen as a transformative step. It aims to leverage indigenous expertise to enhance energy security and sustainability. Dr. Singh’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where innovation can thrive through collaboration between public and private sectors.
AI’s Role in Transforming Healthcare
Dr. Jitendra Singh also addressed the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. He highlighted the success of AI-driven mobile telemedicine units that provide healthcare access to remote areas. These innovations are redefining patient care, making high-quality healthcare services more accessible and affordable. However, he cautioned against over-reliance on AI, stressing the importance of maintaining a balance between technology and human expertise. โAI should complement human intelligence, not replace it,โ he stated, advocating for a hybrid approach that enhances the role of skilled professionals.
As India approaches its centenary of independence in 2047, Dr. Singh called on young innovators to take the lead in shaping the country’s technological future. He emphasized that the investments made today will determine India’s standing in the global economy for decades to come. With ongoing government support for deep-tech research, skill development, and industry-academia collaboration, initiatives like DISHA are poised to play a crucial role in establishing India as a powerhouse of innovation.
