India Celebrates New Year with Record Deliveries
As the clock struck midnight on December 31, 2024, India welcomed the New Year with a flurry of online orders, breaking several instant delivery records. In a world where convenience is king, fast-delivery startups like Swiggy Instamart, Blinkit, and BigBasket showcased the diverse and sometimes humorous preferences of their customers. From party essentials to unexpected items, the shopping habits of consumers on New Year’s Eve provided a fascinating glimpse into the celebratory spirit of the nation.
A Night of Surprising Orders
The New Yearโs Eve festivities saw a remarkable surge in orders across various platforms. Blinkit co-founder Albinder Dhindsa shared insights into the evening’s most popular items. By 8 PM, his team had delivered an astonishing 2.3 lakh packets of aloo bhujiya and 6,834 packets of ice cubes. These party staples were clearly in high demand, as people prepared for their celebrations.
Interestingly, the night also revealed some unexpected trends. Dhindsa noted that 39% of condom sales were for chocolate flavor, while strawberry and bubblegum flavors followed closely behind. This playful insight into consumer behavior highlighted the lighthearted nature of New Yearโs celebrations.
One of the most surprising trends was the sudden spike in grape orders. Dhindsa expressed his astonishment on social media, questioning the reason behind the grape craze. Social media users quickly chimed in, explaining that eating 12 grapes at midnight is a tradition believed to bring good luck for the coming year. This custom gained popularity after being featured in the hit TV show “Modern Family,” showcasing how cultural influences can shape consumer behavior.
Peak Delivery Moments
The excitement of New Yearโs Eve was not limited to Blinkit. Swiggy Instamart also reported impressive delivery statistics. At 7:30 PM, the platform experienced a peak of 853 chip orders per minute. Among the more unusual items ordered were blindfolds and handcuffs, adding a quirky twist to the evening’s festivities.
Phani Kishan A, co-founder of Swiggy Instamart, shared that ice deliveries peaked at 7:41 PM, with an impressive 119 kilograms delivered in just one minute. This surge in demand for ice reflects the importance of chilled beverages during celebrations. Despite the high volume of orders, Chennai lagged behind other major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad in stocking up for the festivities.
The rapid growth of quick commerce platforms has transformed grocery shopping in India. These services promise delivery within minutes, making them a popular choice for last-minute party preparations. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this shift, allowing these companies to expand their reach beyond metropolitan areas to tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
A Surge in Beverage Sales
BigBasket also reported a significant increase in sales as the New Year approached. Non-alcoholic beverage sales skyrocketed by 552%, while disposable cups and plates saw a 325% increase. Mocktail and soda sales also rose by 200%, indicating a shift towards more inclusive celebrations that cater to a wider audience.
This surge in demand for beverages and party supplies highlights the changing landscape of celebrations in India. As more people opt for at-home gatherings, the convenience of online shopping becomes increasingly appealing. The ability to order everything from snacks to party essentials with just a few clicks has revolutionized how people celebrate special occasions.
