India Celebrates Grassroots Innovation at NIF Jubilee

NEW DELHI, March 2: In a landmark initiative, the Modi government is recognizing grassroots innovators across India, according to Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. Speaking at the Silver Jubilee celebration of the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) via virtual platform, he highlighted the government’s commitment to integrating traditional knowledge with modern technology. The event featured the launch of a postal stamp, a magazine titled “Innovation Frontline,” and a coffee table book.
Empowering Rural Innovators
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the vital role of rural innovation in bolstering Indiaโs economy. He stated that innovations emerging from remote villages will be scaled up, ensuring that rural areas receive the same opportunities and resources as urban centers. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between urban and rural innovation, fostering equal growth across the nation.
During his address, Dr. Singh praised India’s transformation from being labeled the ‘Fragile Five’ to now being among the ‘First Five’ economies globally. He called for a scientific approach to explore underutilized sectors, particularly in rural areas, which have been overlooked in the past. This shift in focus is expected to unlock new avenues for economic development and innovation.
Celebrating Scientific Contributions
Dr. Singh also reflected on Prime Minister Modi’s recent call to celebrate National Science Day with enthusiasm, highlighting the unprecedented support for science and technology from the highest levels of government. He expressed his satisfaction after engaging with Padma Awardees who have significantly contributed to innovation, questioning the delay in recognizing these unsung heroes who have been active since the 1990s. He credited PM Modi for transforming the Padma Awards into a true celebration of the people’s achievements.
Additionally, the Minister spotlighted the Micro Venture Innovation Fund (MVIF), a collaborative initiative between NIF and SIDBI, which has provided essential risk capital to 238 innovation-driven enterprises. He debunked the myth that only elite scientists can drive innovation, citing successful grassroots movements like the Lavender Revolution and the Floriculture Revolution as examples of impactful local initiatives.
India’s Technological Vision for the Future
Dr. Singh reiterated the vision of ‘Indiaโs Techade,’ emphasizing the affordability and global appeal of Indian technology. Celebrating NIF’s 25-year journey, he announced the granting of 713 patents in India and five in the USA, showcasing NIF’s role in nurturing grassroots innovations. The NIF Incubation and Entrepreneurship Council (NIFientreC) has supported over 25 startups and numerous enterprises, some achieving annual turnovers exceeding โน10 crore, thereby creating significant employment opportunities in rural areas.
Under PM Modi’s leadership, the government has also opened the space sector to private participation for the first time, along with the nuclear energy sector, as outlined in the recent budget. This move is expected to further stimulate innovation and investment in these critical areas.
A Call to Innovators for a Developed India
Concluding his address, Dr. Singh urged all innovators to contribute to the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047. He described NIF’s 25-year journey as a testament to inclusivity, successfully identifying and supporting grassroots innovations that reach even the most remote villages. He stated, “With science and technology thriving under PM Modiโs leadership, these are indeed the best times for innovation and research in India.”
As the nation moves forward, the recognition of grassroots innovators marks a significant step towards a more inclusive and innovative future for India.
