India Boosts Domestic Agriculture with New Initiatives

The Government of India is ramping up efforts to enhance agricultural production and ensure self-reliance in edible oils and pulses. Through a series of initiatives like the National Mission on Edible Oils and the Dalhan Atmanirbharta Mission, the government aims to bolster the domestic agricultural sector and reduce dependence on imports.

National Mission on Edible Oils Targets Self-Reliance

The National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds) is one of the key programs aimed at increasing domestic oilseed production. According to the latest progress report, the area cultivated and production of oilseeds are showing promising trends:

Area in Lakh Ha, Production in Lakh Tonne and Yield Kg/ha

| Year | Area | Production | Yield |

| 2024-25 | 304.40 | 429.89 | 1412 |

This initiative is complemented by the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), which is operational in 15 states. The main goal of this program is to make India self-sufficient in oil palm production while also decreasing import reliance:

Dalhan Atmanirbharta Mission Launched

On October 11, 2025, Prime Minister Modi launched the Mission for Atmanirbharta in Pulses, aimed at boosting domestic pulse production. With a significant budget of ₹11,440 crore allocated for the mission, the government targets to increase the production of pulses to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030-31.

Enhancing Farmers’ Income

The Ministry of Agriculture is also focused on enhancing farmers’ income through various schemes that emphasize agricultural exports. Initiatives under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) aid farmers by fostering value addition and processing in agriculture. The MIDH promotes comprehensive horticulture development across the nation, facilitating the establishment of processing units and helping farmers adopt modern technologies.

To further support farmers, the government is implementing several reforms including the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojna and the creation of Agricultural Marketing Funds. These initiatives are instrumental in promoting better market linkages for farmers.

Drones in Agriculture

In a step toward modernizing agriculture, the government is promoting drone usage under various schemes. Financial assistance is available for farmers to purchase drones, with grants covering up to 100% of costs for demonstrations. Financial aid is also directed toward Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs) and agricultural entrepreneurs to facilitate the rental of drone services.
