India and Vietnam Strengthen Ties During Historic State Visit

In a significant diplomatic event, Indian President Smt. Droupadi Murmu welcomed H.E. Mr. To Lam, President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, May 6, 2026. This visit marks President Lam’s first state trip to India, underscoring the deep and longstanding ties shared between the two nations. To honor this occasion, President Murmu hosted a banquet in his honor, celebrating the friendship rooted in historical, civilizational, and cultural connections.

The meeting highlighted the recent expansion of India-Vietnam relations, which have flourished through high-level exchanges and cooperative efforts in defense, security, trade, health, science and technology, and tourism. During President Lam’s visit, both leaders announced agreements focusing on crucial areas like rare earth minerals, digital and financial technologies, culture, and education.

Strengthening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

President Murmu expressed her delight as both countries affirmed their commitment to further enhancing relations, formalized in the “Joint Statement on Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” Over the last decade, bilateral trade between India and Vietnam has seen notable growth, with India eager to continue expanding this trade in a balanced and mutually beneficial manner.

Regional Cooperation and Security

Additionally, the President highlighted the role of Vietnam in India’s “Act East” policy and its significance within the framework of ASEAN’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. She praised Vietnam’s contributions to the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in addressing shared challenges.

Defence and security were noted as vital aspects of the India-Vietnam relationship. President Murmu reiterated India’s dedication to collaborating with Vietnam to promote regional peace and stability. The leaders agreed on the immense benefits that a close partnership could bring to their respective peoples.

Looking ahead, President Murmu expressed optimism that, under President To Lam’s leadership, the relationship between India and Vietnam would continue to grow even stronger, paving the way for future cooperation and mutual progress.
