India and Netherlands Unite for Clean Energy Innovation

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of India is taking a leading role in the Mission Integrated Biorefinery, collaborating with the Netherlands as part of Mission Innovation (MI) 2.0. This initiative was highlighted during the Mission Innovation Annual Gathering 2025, held in Seoul, South Korea, from April 9 to 11. The event brought together global leaders to discuss advancements in clean energy technology, emphasizing India’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Key Discussions at the Annual Gathering
During the Annual Gathering in Seoul, the DBT participated actively as part of the Indian delegation. The discussions centered around collaborative opportunities across various MI missions and platforms, with a particular focus on advancing biorefinery technologies for fuels, chemicals, and materials. The DBT showcased its BioE3 (Biotechnology for Environment, Energy, and Economy) Policy, which aims to tackle climate challenges while aligning with national priorities under the Integrated Biorefinery Mission. This policy was a focal point of roundtable discussions, where its significance in promoting sustainable practices was thoroughly examined by Mission Innovation members and Technical Advisory Groups.
Promoting Sustainable Manufacturing
Participants at the gathering underscored the importance of the BioE3 Policy in fostering sustainable and low-carbon manufacturing processes. The policy is designed to cultivate enabling technologies that support an innovation-driven manufacturing ecosystem aimed at achieving a low-carbon future. Additionally, India shared its advancements in integrating Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Bioenergy (CCUB) into biomanufacturing processes for fuels, chemicals, and materials. These discussions highlighted the collaborative spirit of the MI community in addressing global climate challenges.
Research and Development Opportunities
The gathering also focused on research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) opportunities utilizing biomass-based biomanufacturing approaches. The DBT engaged in specialized sessions regarding biotechnology and biomanufacturing priorities during visits to clean energy facilities. These visits, coordinated by the Indian Embassy in Seoul, included meetings at Hanyang University and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. The discussions revealed that bioinnovations in fuels, chemicals, and materials present significant opportunities for Mission Innovation member countries to accelerate their decarbonization efforts.
