India and Brazil Strengthen Trade Relations in Key Meeting
The recently concluded 8th Meeting of the India-Brazil Trade Monitoring Mechanism (TMM) in BrasÃlia marked a significant step forward in enhancing strategic and economic partnerships between the two nations. Co-chaired by India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and Brazil’s Secretary of Foreign Trade Tatiana Lacerda Prazeres, the meeting capitalized on the political momentum established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Luiz Inácio Lula De Silva.
As the discussions unfolded, both sides reflected on the robust institutional framework supporting the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to expand economic ties. A key highlight was the ongoing growth in bilateral trade, which reached USD 15.07 billion during the fiscal year 2025-26. Both nations expressed their ambitious goal of doubling this figure to USD 30 billion by 2030, focusing on diverse sectors such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, engineering goods, and machinery.
Advancing Trade Agreements and Market Access
The meeting also facilitated a comprehensive review of the India-MERCOSUR (Southern Common Market) Terms of Reference. Both nations acknowledged the considerable potential for modernization and expansion under the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement, which has seen bilateral trade rise to USD 20.84 billion as of 2025. There was a strong commitment to finalize the Terms of Reference promptly.
Progress was also made in providing Indian pharmaceutical products with greater market access. The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and Brazil’s ANVISA creates a platform for enhanced cooperation in health and pharmaceuticals. India emphasized the importance of creating predictable regulatory pathways to ensure the availability of affordable, high-quality medicines.
Collaboration in Agriculture and Trade Facilitation
On the agriculture front, discussions zeroed in on addressing phytosanitary requests and establishing a clear agenda to achieve reciprocal market access concessions. Significant advancements were noted in mutual recognition of Electronic Certificates of Origin and cooperation in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), entrepreneurship, and crafts, paving the way for a smoother trade environment.
Both parties underscored the importance of collaborating on multilateral issues within frameworks such as BRICS, the G20, and the WTO. India’s leadership during its BRICS Presidency received commendations from Brazil, particularly for initiatives aimed at fostering economic partnerships and cooperation.
High-Level Business Reception
A notable component of the engagement was the India-Brazil High Level Business Reception in BrasÃlia, attended by leading business figures from both nations. Commerce Secretary Agrawal led a delegation of over 25 Indian companies, including prominent names like Kirloskar Group and Aditya Birla Group. This reception provided a valuable platform to explore new collaboration opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing.
Moreover, the establishment of an ApexBrasil office in New Delhi is expected to enhance business-to-business connectivity and increase Brazilian investment in India. The longstanding relationship between India and Brazil, built on mutual trust and shared values, has been invigorated, setting a positive tone for the future of their economic partnership.
