India is making significant strides in the development of bullet trains and advanced signalling systems. Senior government officials have confirmed that the country is moving towards domestic manufacturing of these high-speed trains. The initiative is expected to gain momentum, particularly in Maharashtra, following recent election outcomes. Advancements in Bullet Train Development
The Indian Railways is set to develop indigenous high-speed trains based on the existing Vande Bharat platform. This initiative aims to create a robust framework for future standard gauge high-speed corridors. The government has emphasized the importance of developing advanced signalling systems, which will support the implementation of Kavach 5.0. This system represents the latest in automatic train protection technology, ensuring safer and more efficient train operations.
Work on the bullet train corridor in Maharashtra has accelerated since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government took office. Officials report that land acquisition is complete, and over 320 kilometers of physical infrastructure is already in place. This progress indicates a strong commitment to enhancing India’s rail infrastructure and improving connectivity between major cities.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project serves as a valuable learning experience for future corridors. Future Plans for High-Speed Corridors

The MAHSR corridor’s civil works are currently 50% complete, demonstrating significant progress. The Railway Board has tasked the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) with producing bullet trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 280 kilometers per hour. Additionally, BEML has been engaged to manufacture these trains, with a contract value of Rs 866.87 crore. Each coach will cost approximately Rs 27.86 crore, covering design, development, and testing expenses.
The government is also focused on improving the technology used in these trains. Incremental advancements in bogies and suspension systems are planned. However, significant development is required for the powertrain and body of the trains, which is expected to take around three years.
Collaboration with Japanese Suppliers
While India aims to develop its own bullet trains, the government has clarified that it does not intend to sever ties with Japanese suppliers. Ongoing negotiations are in place regarding the supply deal for modern trains that will operate on the MAHSR corridor. This collaboration is crucial for ensuring that India benefits from advanced technology and expertise in high-speed rail systems.
The partnership with Japanese firms is expected to enhance India’s capabilities in bullet train manufacturing. By leveraging their experience, India can accelerate its own development timeline and improve the quality of its high-speed trains.
