INCOIS Honored with Subhash Chandra Bose Award
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has received the prestigious Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar for 2025. This award recognizes INCOIS’s exceptional contributions to disaster management in India. The award, instituted by the Government of India, aims to honor individuals and organizations that have made significant strides in this critical field.
The Significance of the Subhash Chandra Bose Award
The Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar is an annual award established by the Government of India. It is named after the revered leader Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, whose birth anniversary is celebrated on January 23rd. The award acknowledges the selfless service and invaluable contributions made by individuals and organizations in disaster management.
Each year, the award carries a cash prize of โน51 lakh for institutions and โน5 lakh for individuals, along with a certificate. The award aims to inspire others to engage in disaster management efforts. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has emphasized the importance of effective disaster management practices. This initiative has led to improved preparedness and response mechanisms across the country.
INCOIS: A Leader in Disaster Management
Established in 1999 in Hyderabad, Telangana, INCOIS plays a crucial role in India’s disaster management strategy. The center specializes in providing early warnings for ocean-related hazards. One of its key achievements is the establishment of the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC). This center can issue tsunami alerts within just 10 minutes, serving not only India but also 28 other countries in the Indian Ocean region.
INCOIS has been recognized by UNESCO as a leading Tsunami Service Provider. It operates a network of seismic stations, tide gauges, and ocean sensors to monitor ocean conditions. This infrastructure allows INCOIS to provide forecasts for high waves, cyclones, and storm surges, thereby protecting coastal communities and maritime operations.
During significant events like the 2013 Phailin and 2014 Hudhud cyclones, INCOIS issued timely advisories that facilitated evacuations and minimized risks to coastal populations.
Innovative Tools and Recognition
INCOIS has developed several innovative tools to enhance disaster response capabilities. One such tool is the Search and Rescue Aided Tool (SARAT), designed to assist the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, and Coastal Security Police in locating individuals or objects lost at sea. This tool has proven invaluable in search and rescue operations.
Additionally, INCOIS has created the SynOPS visualization platform. This platform integrates real-time data to improve coordination during extreme weather events. The center’s efforts have not gone unnoticed; it received the Geospatial World Excellence in Maritime Services Award in 2024 and the Disaster Risk Reduction Excellence Award in 2021.
The recognition of INCOIS through the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar underscores its vital role in enhancing disaster management practices in India. The center continues to set benchmarks in the field, ensuring the safety and security of coastal communities.
