George Szirtes was born on 29 November 1948, in Budapest, Hungary, Szirtes experienced the tumultuous effects of World War II and the subsequent Soviet occupation of Hungary.

Szirtes grew up in Budapest but emigrated to England with his family in 1956 during the Hungarian Uprising. Settling in London, Szirtes embarked on his educational journey, eventually studying Fine Art at Leeds College of Art and later attending the University of London, where he pursued studies in English Literature and subsequently completed a postgraduate degree in Fine Art at the University of Leeds.

Szirtes’ career is marked by his prolific output as a poet, translator, and educator. He gained recognition for his poetry collections, which often draw from his personal experiences as an immigrant and explore themes of displacement, identity, and cultural memory. Some of his notable works include “The Budapest File” (2000), “Reel” (2004), and “The Burning of the Books and Other Poems” (2009).
