Implementation of Time of Day Electricity Tariff System

The Union Minister for Energy and New and Renewable Energy informed that the Ministry of Power see communication dated 14.06.2023 issued the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2023 which also specified the rule for the Time of Day (ToD) rate. The minister communicated it the main features of this Regulation they are as below:

I. The ToD tariff for Commercial and Industrial consumers with maximum demand above 10 kW will come into force from 1st April 2024 and for other consumers except agricultural consumers, the ToD tariff will come into force by 1st April 2024st April 2025.

ii. The ToD tariff will be effective immediately after the installation of smart meters for consumers.

iii. The ToD rate, in the peak time slot, for Commercial and Industrial consumers must not be less than 1.20 times the normal rate and for other consumers it must not be less than 1.10 times the normal rate.

iv. The tariff for the solar hours of the day, which will be established by the State Commission, will be at least twenty percent (20%) lower than the normal tariff for that category of consumers.

v. The ToD tariff will be applicable on the energy debit component of the normal tariff.

YOU. The length of peak hours shall be no more than daylight hours as notified by the applicable State Electricity Regulatory Commission or the State Cargo Shipping Center, and the length of daylight hours shall be eight hours per day as specified by the State Commission.

The Minister informed that the draft regulation was circulated for comments by interested parties on 20.04.2023. The opinions/suggestions received were examined and appropriately implemented in the aforementioned Regulation.
