According to the information available at the Ministry, there are around 150 Great Indian Bustards in the country.

The Ministry provides financial assistance to States, including Gujarat, under the Recovery Program for the rescue of endangered species and its habitats and the conservation and management of protected areas component of the Central Sponsoring Program – Development of Indian bustard conservation and protection wildlife habitat. Furthermore, the Ministry has sanctioned an outlay of Rs. 33.85 crore for the duration of seven years for the program titled “Habitat Improvement and Conservation Breeding of Great Indian Bustard-an integrated approach” under CAMPA in the year 2016.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Wildlife Institute of India and the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC), United Arab Emirates, to undertake collaborative work towards the conservation of the Indian bustard.

This information was provided by Union State Minister for Environment, Forestry and Climate Change Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey in a written response to the Rajya Sabha.
