Ian Fleming: Creator of James Bond
Ian Lancaster Fleming (28 May 1908 – 12 August 1964) was a British writer best known for his postwar James Bond series of spy novels. He created one of the best-selling fictional book series of all time, with Bond novels selling over 100 million copies worldwide.
Early Life and Education
Fleming was born on 28 May 1908, at 27 Green Street in Mayfair, London, into a wealthy family connected to the merchant bank Robert Fleming & Co. His father, Valentine Fleming, served as Member of Parliament for Henley from 1910 until his death on the Western Front in 1917. His mother was Evelyn “Eve” Fleming. Fleming was a grandson of Scottish financier Robert Fleming, who co-founded the Scottish American Investment Company and the merchant bank that bore his name.
He attended Durnford School, a preparatory school in Dorset, from 1914, though he found the experience difficult. In 1921 he enrolled at Eton College, where he excelled at athletics and held the title of Victor Ludorum for two years between 1925 and 1927. He also edited the school magazine, The Wyvern. His time at Eton ended early when his housemaster persuaded his mother to remove him for a crammer course. He spent less than a year at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, leaving in 1927 without a commission.
To prepare for possible entry into the Foreign Office, Fleming attended the Tennerhof in Kitzbühel, Austria, in 1927, where he improved his language skills. He studied briefly at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the University of Geneva. In October 1931, after failing to secure a Foreign Office position, he began work as a sub-editor and journalist for Reuters News Agency.
Career and Achievements
Fleming worked as a journalist for Reuters before joining Britain’s Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War. During wartime service, he was involved in planning Operation Goldeneye and in the planning and oversight of two intelligence units: 30 Assault Unit and T-Force. His wartime experience and journalism background provided the material and authenticity that would later define his fiction.
Fleming wrote his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at age 44. The book was an immediate success, with three print runs commissioned to meet demand. Between 1953 and 1966, eleven additional Bond novels and two collections of short stories followed. The Bond novels centre around James Bond, an officer in MI6 (the Secret Intelligence Service), who holds the code number 007 and served as a commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Fleming also wrote the children’s story Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang in 1964 and two works of non-fiction.
The Bond series ranks among the best-selling fictional book series of all time. In 2008, The Times ranked Fleming 14th on its list of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”. Fleming’s creation has appeared in film twenty-seven times, portrayed by six actors in the official film series, and other writers have continued to produce Bond novels after his death.
Notable Events and Milestones
Fleming’s first Bond novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1952 and became an immediate commercial success. Two of his James Bond books were published posthumously, extending his influence beyond his lifetime. His children’s novel Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang appeared in 1964, the same year as his death.
Fleming was married to Anne Charteris, who had divorced her husband, the 2nd Viscount Rothermere, because of her affair with Fleming. The couple had a son, Caspar. Fleming died on 12 August 1964 from complications of heart disease at the age of 56. A heavy smoker and drinker for most of his life, he left behind a literary legacy that would define spy fiction for generations.
