HP Leads Indian PC Market with 8.1% Year-over-Year Shipment Growth

PC shipments in India experienced a notable increase of 8.1% during the first quarter of 2025, according to a report from market research firm IDC. This growth was primarily driven by strong demand from enterprises and small to medium-sized businesses. HP dominated the market with a significant 29.1% share, followed by Lenovo and Dell in second and third place, respectively. While the notebook and workstation categories thrived, the desktop segment saw a decline during this period.

Growth in PC Market

The latest Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker report by IDC highlights that India’s PC market reached a total shipment of 3.3 million units in Q1 2025. This marks the seventh consecutive quarter of growth for the domestic PC market. Notebooks saw a remarkable year-over-year increase of 13.8%, while workstations surged by 30.4%. However, the desktop category faced a downturn, declining by 2.4% compared to the previous year. Notably, premium notebook shipments also grew by 8%, and AI notebooks experienced an impressive 185.1% increase in shipments.

Leading Brands in the Market

According to the IDC report, HP, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus emerged as the top five brands in the Indian PC market. HP led with a commanding 29.1% market share, excelling in both consumer and commercial segments. In the commercial sector, HP’s share reached 32.7%, driven by a remarkable 60.6% growth in enterprise demand. Lenovo secured the second position with an 18.9% market share, showing significant growth in both consumer and commercial segments, with increases of 36.4% and 33.8%, respectively.

Dell followed in third place with a 15.6% market share, ranking second in the commercial segment with a 22% share. Acer claimed the fourth spot with a 15.4% market share, achieving a 7.6% year-over-year growth, largely due to its strong online presence and expanding offline reach. Asus rounded out the top five with a 6% market share and an 8.6% growth rate, particularly thriving in the commercial segment with a 41.1% increase.

Consumer and Commercial Segment Insights

The IDC report indicates that the consumer segment grew by 8.9% year-over-year, bolstered by sales during Republic Day and a significant shipment push in March. The e-tail channel saw a remarkable 21.9% growth, while the commercial segment experienced a more modest increase of 7.5%. However, the commercial desktop category faced a decline of 2.5%. IDC’s associate vice president of Devices Research, Navkendar Singh, noted that enterprise orders are driving commercial sales, although the Indian IT/ITES sector remains cautious, focusing on optimizing existing IT assets. He emphasized that the rising demand for gaming notebooks is contributing to the growth of the consumer segment.

Singh also pointed out that the integration of AI capabilities into business operations is prompting organizations to adopt AI PCs, which are expected to enhance productivity, security, and automation. This trend is anticipated to continue growing in the upcoming quarters, reflecting the evolving needs of the market.
