Housing for All: PMAY-G Progress in Madhya Pradesh
The Ministry of Rural Development in India is dedicated to the ambitious goal of “Housing for All.” This initiative is primarily driven by the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), which has been in effect since April 1, 2016. The Union Cabinet recently approved an additional target of 2 crore houses under a new phase of PMAY-G, which will be implemented from FY 2024-25 to FY 2028-29. Since its inception, PMAY-G has made significant strides. As of now, 3.33 crore houses have been targeted, with 3.23 crore houses sanctioned and 2.69 crore houses completed. The total financial assistance disbursed to beneficiaries since the launch of the scheme stands at ₹2.37 lakh crore. This financial support is crucial for ensuring that the construction of houses progresses smoothly and efficiently.
Achievements in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh has been a significant beneficiary of the PMAY-G scheme. The state has set an ambitious target of constructing 41,68,046 houses. So far, 41,51,931 houses have been sanctioned, and an impressive 36,80,620 houses have been completed, which accounts for 88% of the target. This remarkable progress showcases the effective implementation of the scheme at the state level.
However, there are still challenges to address. Based on the Awaas+ 2018 list, there are 16.42 lakh households in Madhya Pradesh that remain on the waiting list for housing. To tackle this issue, the government plans to allocate 8.21 lakh houses by January 15, 2025, with a commitment to complete these houses in a timely manner. The financial support allocated for Madhya Pradesh for FY 2024-25 is ₹3,726 crore, which includes a swift disbursal of ₹2,165 crore to ensure beneficiaries receive timely assistance.
Technological Advancements and Future Goals
The PMAY-G scheme is not just about constructing houses; it also embraces technological advancements to enhance efficiency. The launch of the Awaas+ 2024 mobile application by the Prime Minister on September 17, 2024, is a significant step forward. This application utilizes AI-based facial recognition for accurate beneficiary identification, ensuring that the right individuals receive the benefits of the scheme. Over 2.5 lakh surveyors have been trained to implement this technology effectively across the country.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Rural Development remains committed to ensuring that no eligible family is left without a pucca house. They have urged the Madhya Pradesh government to expedite fund utilization for seamless implementation of the housing scheme. The integration of PMAY-G with other government schemes, such as MGNREGA and the Jal Jeevan Mission, further enhances the benefits for the rural population. This convergence of schemes has led to the construction of 36.37 lakh toilets and the electrification of 35 lakh houses in Madhya Pradesh, contributing to overall rural development.
