Himachal Pradesh Hosts Training Workshop on 21st Livestock Census Software and Breed Identification
The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, in collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh government, organized a state-level training workshop in Shimla today. The event aimed to equip State and District Nodal Officers (SNO/DNO) and Supervisors with the skills necessary for conducting the 21st Livestock Census, scheduled between September and December 2024. This workshop is pivotal in ensuring the accurate and efficient collection of data through newly launched mobile and web applications.
The workshop was inaugurated by Chief Guest Shri Chander Kumar, the Cabinet Minister for Agriculture & Animal Husbandry, Government of Himachal Pradesh. Other distinguished guests included Shri Rakesh Kanwar, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Himachal Pradesh, Shri V P Singh, Director of Animal Husbandry Statistics, DAHD, Government of India, Dr. B P Mishra, Director of ICAR-NBAGR, and Dr. Pradeep Sharma, Director of Animal Husbandry, Government of Himachal Pradesh. The ceremony began with the National Anthem and traditional lamp lighting, setting a tone of unity and purpose.
In his address, Shri Chander Kumar emphasized the critical role of technology in ensuring accurate data collection, urging all participants to fully engage in the training to guarantee the success of the census. He highlighted that the data collected would be instrumental in shaping future policies and programs within the animal husbandry sector.
Shri Rakesh Kanwar also addressed the participants, stressing the importance of grassroots-level training and capacity building. He noted that the livestock sector is vital to India’s economy and food security, and the upcoming census would be crucial in identifying challenges and opportunities within the industry.
The workshop featured detailed sessions led by experts, including a presentation from Dr. B P Mishra and his team from ICAR-NBAGR on the breed details of the species to be covered in the census. The importance of accurate breed identification was underscored, as this data will feed into various livestock programs and contribute to the National Indicator Framework (NIF) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Shri V P Singh highlighted the integration of sustainable practices within the livestock sector and the importance of data analysis in formulating future policies and programs. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by the Joint Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Himachal Pradesh, who expressed gratitude to all participants and expressed confidence in the success of the census operation.
