Hackathon ‘Innovate with GoIStats’ Launches for Students

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), in partnership with MyGov, is set to host a data visualization hackathon titled ‘Innovate with GoIStats’ from February 25 to March 31, 2025. This initiative invites students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as research associates from recognized Indian institutions, to participate. The hackathon aims to raise awareness about the data generated by the Ministry and encourage innovative uses of this data through technology, including artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Eligibility and Participation Details

Students currently enrolled in undergraduate (UG) or postgraduate (PG) programs, as well as those who have completed their degrees in the financial year 2024-25, are eligible to participate in the ‘Innovate with GoIStats’ hackathon. This initiative is designed to engage young minds in the field of data analysis and visualization. Participants will have the opportunity to create visual representations of the data provided by MoSPI, which can be instrumental for researchers and policymakers in deriving insights. The hackathon not only encourages creativity but also aims to foster a deeper understanding of the statistical data generated by the Ministry. By leveraging technology, participants can explore various methodologies for data analysis, ultimately contributing to the broader goal of enhancing data literacy among students and researchers in India.

Promoting Data Literacy and Statistical Analysis

MoSPI has implemented several measures to promote data literacy and statistical analysis among students and researchers. One of the key initiatives includes the publication of official statistics on the Ministry’s website, along with dissemination through social media platforms. This accessibility allows students and researchers to utilize the data for their projects and analyses.

Additionally, MoSPI offers internship opportunities under the ‘National Internship in Official Statistics’ program, aimed at students and research scholars from recognized institutions. This program provides practical experience in the field of official statistics, further enhancing the skills of participants. Furthermore, the Ministry supports research in official statistics through financial assistance under its Grant-in-Aid component, encouraging innovative projects and studies.

Training and Awareness Programs

The National Statistical Systems Training Academy (NSSTA) plays a crucial role in promoting awareness of official statistics. It organizes one-week programs for Heads of Departments and students from various disciplines, including Statistics, Economics, and Social Sciences, at both Central and State Universities. These programs aim to educate participants about the importance of statistical data and its applications. Moreover, NSSTA conducts one-day workshops on official statistics specifically for undergraduate and postgraduate students at their respective campuses. These workshops are designed to provide hands-on experience and foster a deeper understanding of statistical methodologies, thereby equipping students with the necessary skills to analyze and interpret data effectively.
