Graham Thorpe Seeks Support from His Wife Amid Personal Challenges

Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe tragically passed away in August 2022 after being struck by a train at Esher railway station. His widow, Amanda Thorpe, revealed the distressing final weeks of his life during a recent inquest at the Surrey coroner’s court. Graham’s mental health struggles intensified following his dismissal from the England batting coach position in 2022, a fate he had predicted after a controversial incident during an Ashes tour. The inquest detailed his struggles, attempts to seek help, and the heart-wrenching moment Amanda learned of his death.

Graham Thorpe’s Final Days

The inquest into Graham Thorpe’s death has shed light on the events leading up to the tragedy. Amanda Thorpe recounted how her husband expressed a desire to end his life, mentioning Switzerland as a place he wished to go to escape his pain. The weeks preceding his death were marked by increasing despair. Amanda stated, “He doesn’t want to be here any more,” indicating the depth of his emotional crisis. His mental health decline, which began after losing his coaching role, was further exacerbated by feelings of isolation and hopelessness.

The Impact of His Dismissal

Graham Thorpe’s struggles with mental health began after a controversial incident during the Ashes tour in Australia. A video depicting him smoking a cigar indoors led to his removal from the England coaching staff. Amanda noted that this dismissal was a significant blow to him, stating, “To be sacked after that โ€” I think it was foreseeable that it would be really really hard on him.” This moment marked a pivotal shift in his mental state, with Amanda recalling that he returned from Australia in a “terrible state.” She believed that his dismissal from the coaching staff was a turning point in his life.

Attempts to Seek Help

Despite his declining condition, Thorpe was offered a coaching position with Afghanistan’s national team. However, he was unable to take on the role due to his deteriorating health. Amanda revealed that he had signed a contract but, due to his spiraling situation, she had to inform the team he was too unwell to fulfill the position. By June 2024, his condition worsened significantly; Amanda described him as having “no interest in food” and wanting to isolate himself completely. This situation put immense strain on both Graham and his family, underscoring the severity of his mental health struggles.
