The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has significantly enhanced India’s food processing sector through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) since its inception in 2017-18. The scheme, designed to modernize infrastructure from farm to retail, has been pivotal in strengthening the country’s food preservation and processing capabilities.
Under various PMKSY components—such as Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure, and Creation/Expansion of Food Processing and Preservation Capacities—the government has sanctioned 1,217 projects with a total investment of ₹31,308.24 crore. Of this, ₹8,698.18 crore comes from MoFPI’s grants, attracting ₹22,610.06 crore in private investments. To date, 651 projects have been completed, boosting annual preservation and processing capacities by 48.91 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) and 183.523 LMT respectively.
In parallel, the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme has focused on reducing post-harvest losses by training farmers and micro-entrepreneurs in value addition. National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) in Thanjavur has played a key role, conducting 26 webinars and over 1,500 hands-on training sessions, benefiting 37,330 and 10,000 individuals respectively.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has also contributed by developing post-harvest machinery and storage protocols while promoting modern storage systems through various outreach activities.
These efforts collectively aim to create a robust food processing infrastructure, fostering investment and enhancing agricultural value addition across the country.
