Government to Help More Workers Get Homes Under PMAY

OV Desk

In a big move to help workers across India, the Ministry of Labour and Employment is working to extend the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) to more people. This plan is to make sure that workers like migrant workers, building workers, beedi workers, cine workers, non-coal mine workers, contract workers, and other unorganised workers can get homes under the government’s housing scheme.

The decision comes after the Union Cabinet agreed to keep the PMAY program going for another five years, from 2024-25 to 2028-29. The goal is to provide 2 crore more houses to those who need them most. The Ministry says it’s important to help these workers because they are some of the most vulnerable people in society. Giving them better housing is a way to ensure they live in safer and healthier conditions.

New Online System to Track Worker Benefits

The Ministry has also launched a new online system called the Management Information System (MIS) portal on August 21, 2024. This portal is now fully working and is designed to collect and analyze data about workers. The system will track how funds are used and how many workers are getting benefits like insurance, health care, and housing.

This system will help State Governments and Union Territories make better decisions and create better programs to support these workers.

Working Together to Help Workers

The Ministry is asking Welfare Commissioners in different states to work closely with local authorities. This teamwork is important to make sure these new plans are successful and that the workers get the help they need.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment is also holding regional meetings with states and Union Territories between August 29 and October 4, 2024, to check on how the plan is going. This move is expected to make a big difference in the lives of millions of workers, helping them get the homes and social security benefits they deserve.
