Government Cracks Down on Drug Cartels

In a decisive move against drug trafficking, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the seizure of methamphetamine tablets valued at ₹88 crore and the arrest of four members of an international drug cartel. The operation, conducted by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), highlights the government’s commitment to eradicating drug-related issues in India. Shah praised the NCB’s efforts, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to investigations.

Details of the Operations

On March 13, 2025, the NCB’s Imphal Zone officers intercepted a truck in the Lilong area based on actionable intelligence. A thorough search revealed 102.39 kg of methamphetamine tablets hidden in the vehicle’s toolbox. Two individuals were apprehended at the scene. Following this, a follow-up operation led to the arrest of a suspected receiver of the drugs, along with a vehicle used for trafficking. Investigators believe the drugs originated from Moreh, and efforts are ongoing to identify additional suspects involved in the operation. Simultaneously, NCB officers in the Guwahati Zone conducted another operation on the same day. They stopped an SUV near the Assam-Mizoram border and discovered 7.48 kg of methamphetamine concealed within the spare tire. The occupant of the vehicle was arrested, and investigations revealed that the drugs were sourced from Moreh, with Karimganj as the suspected destination. Authorities are continuing their inquiries to uncover further connections in this trafficking network.

Expanding Investigations

In a related development, the NCB has taken over an investigation from the Mizoram State Excise Department concerning a seizure of approximately 46 kg of crystal meth in Aizawl on March 6. Four individuals linked to this drug syndicate have been arrested. The NCB aims to explore the international and inter-state connections of this trafficking network, further intensifying its efforts against drug-related crimes.

Addressing Regional Vulnerabilities

The North Eastern Region of India has become a hotspot for drug trafficking due to its geographical location. Recognizing this challenge, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) bolstered the NCB’s resources in 2023 to enhance the fight against drugs in the area. The NCB operates through five zonal units and a regional headquarters in the Northeast, focusing on combating traffickers, particularly those dealing in synthetic drugs like methamphetamine, commonly known as YABA. This ongoing battle is crucial not only for the health of the region’s youth but also for national security.
