Government Acknowledges Demand for Modernization of Patna Airport Terminal

In a significant advancement for air travel and infrastructure in Bihar, the newly inaugurated terminal at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna is set to enhance connectivity in the region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the ultra-modern terminal, which cost โน1,200 crore to build and is designed to accommodate up to one crore passengers annually. This development marks a pivotal moment for Patna, which now boasts facilities capable of handling 3,000 passengers during peak hours, alongside the foundation stone for a new Civil Enclave at Bihta.
Modern Facilities and Passenger Experience
The new terminal at Patna Airport spans over 65,150 square meters and is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities aimed at providing a seamless travel experience. It features 64 check-in counters, nine Automatic Tray Retrieval Systems (ATRS), and five aerobridges, along with a Multilevel Car Parking (MLCP) facility that can accommodate 1,100 vehicles. The terminal’s design integrates elements of Biharโs rich cultural heritage, showcasing Mithila art and architecture inspired by the historic Nalanda Mahavihara. Additionally, the terminal emphasizes sustainability, incorporating green technologies such as LED lighting, insulated roofing, and energy-efficient glazing, all aimed at achieving a 4-star GRIHA rating.
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the evolution of air travel in Bihar, noting that the state now has multiple operational airports, including the recently opened Darbhanga Airport, which offers direct flights to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. This expansion addresses the long-standing demand for improved air travel facilities in the region, fulfilling a critical need for the local population.
Foundation of Bihta Civil Enclave
Alongside the terminal’s inauguration, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the new Civil Enclave at Bihta Air Force Station, located approximately 35 kilometers from Patna. This ambitious project, with an estimated cost of โน1,413 crore, will cover 68,000 square meters and is expected to serve 50 lakh passengers annually. The Bihta terminal will feature 64 check-in counters, 16 self-check-in kiosks, 10 ATRS, and five aerobridges, all designed to enhance passenger convenience.
Architecturally, the Bihta terminal draws inspiration from the Mauryan and Gupta eras, as well as the ancient Nalanda and Vikramshila universities. It aims for a 5-star GRIHA rating and includes sustainable infrastructure elements such as a sewage treatment plant for recycled water usage. This development is anticipated to transform Bihta into a hub for trade, tourism, education, and healthcare, significantly contributing to regional development and job creation.
Government Commitment to Aviation Development
The inauguration of the Patna terminal and the foundation of the Bihta Civil Enclave underscore the Indian government’s commitment to enhancing the aviation sector and improving regional connectivity. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu expressed pride in these developments, stating that they represent a milestone in India’s aviation journey under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. He emphasized that the new terminal is not merely an infrastructure project but a gateway to opportunities, tourism, and local pride.
These initiatives align with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat, aiming to modernize India’s aviation landscape and ensure that regions like Bihar are well-connected. The governmentโs focus on infrastructure development is expected to foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents, making air travel more accessible and efficient for the people of Bihar.
