Google Updates Android Smartphone Requirements

Google has announced new minimum specifications for smartphones running on Android that utilize Google Mobile Services (GMS). The tech giant has raised the bar for RAM and storage requirements, ensuring that devices meet modern standards. Additionally, new regulations mandate support for sharing emergency contact information during emergencies, enhancing user safety.

New RAM and Storage Standards for Android 15

According to Android Authority, the updated specifications for smartphones shipping with Android 15 now require at least 32GB of built-in storage. This marks an increase from the previous requirement of 16GB, which was raised after the release of Android 13. Manufacturers must ensure that 75% of this storage is reserved for user data, reflecting the growing size of applications and the need for more space on devices.

Currently, most entry-level smartphones come equipped with at least 64GB of storage, making this new requirement more aligned with consumer expectations. Furthermore, the minimum RAM requirement for devices running Android has been set at 4GB. This means that smartphones with only 3GB of RAM will need to operate on Android Go, a version optimized for less powerful devices.

Upcoming Changes with Android 16

Looking ahead, Google plans to increase the minimum RAM requirement to 6GB with the release of Android 16. This change will necessitate that devices with 4GB of RAM also transition to Android Go. The move aims to ensure that smartphones can handle more demanding applications and provide a smoother user experience.

Additionally, smartphones shipping with Android 15 must include processors that support the Vulkan 1.3 (or newer) 3D graphics and compute API. This requirement is part of Google’s effort to enhance the gaming and graphics capabilities of Android devices, ensuring they remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

Enhanced Features for User Safety and Accessibility

In a bid to improve user safety, Google has mandated that all new smartphones support emergency contact sharing with emergency services. This feature is crucial for users who may find themselves in critical situations where quick access to help is necessary.

Moreover, Google has strongly recommended that manufacturers include support for hearing aids via Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) using the Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) protocol in Android 15 devices. This feature is expected to become mandatory for smartphones launching with Bluetooth 5.0 and Android 16, further enhancing accessibility for users with hearing impairments.

These updates reflect Google’s commitment to improving the overall smartphone experience, ensuring that devices are equipped with the necessary features to meet modern user needs while prioritizing safety and accessibility.
