Google Unveils Gemma 3 AI Models with Enhanced Features

Google has officially launched the Gemma 3 family of artificial intelligence models, marking a significant upgrade from the previous Gemma 2 series introduced in August 2024. These new open-source models come equipped with advanced text and visual reasoning capabilities, supporting over 35 languages and offering fine-tuning options for an additional 140 languages. The tech giant emphasizes that these models are optimized for operation on a single GPU or Google’s Tensor Processing Unit (TPU).

In a recent blog post, Google detailed the features of the new small language models (SLMs) within the Gemma 3 series. Built on the same technology as the flagship Gemini 2.0 models, the Gemma series is designed for open-source use and on-device performance. Google reports that the Gemma models have been downloaded over 100 million times, leading to the creation of more than 60,000 variants. This widespread adoption highlights the models’ popularity and versatility in various applications. According to Google, the Gemma 3 models outperform competitors such as Meta’s Llama-405B, DeepSeek-V3, and OpenAI’s o3-mini AI models on the LMArena leaderboard. The series is available in four sizesโ€”1B, 4B, 12B, and 27B parametersโ€”allowing users to choose the model that best fits their needs. Each model can be effectively run on a single GPU or TPU, making them accessible for a wide range of developers.

Advanced Capabilities and Safety Features

The Gemma 3 series boasts advanced text and visual reasoning capabilities, enabling the analysis of images, text, and short videos. With a context window of 128,000 tokens, these models can handle extensive data inputs, enhancing their utility in complex applications. Additionally, the models support function calling, which allows developers to integrate agentic capabilities into their applications, further expanding their functionality. Google has emphasized the importance of safety in the development of the Gemma 3 models. The company conducted thorough risk assessments and enforced internal safety policies through fine-tuning and benchmark evaluations. The models were rigorously tested against more capable models, resulting in a low risk level, according to Google’s claims. This commitment to safety aims to ensure that the AI models can be used responsibly across various sectors.

Introducing ShieldGemma 2 for Enhanced Safety

Alongside the Gemma 3 series, Google has also launched ShieldGemma 2, a 4B parameter image safety checker designed to prevent the generation of harmful, sexually explicit, or violent content. This tool provides developers with the option to customize safety parameters further, enhancing the overall security of applications built using the Gemma models. The Gemma 3 family of AI models is available for download through Google’s Hugging Face listing or on Kaggle, making them easily accessible for developers looking to leverage cutting-edge AI technology.
