Google Unveils Exciting AI Features for Gemini

Google has announced the introduction of two innovative artificial intelligence features for its Gemini platform. The new tools, Canvas and Audio Overview, aim to enhance user interaction and collaboration with AI in document and coding tasks. These features are being rolled out globally for both Gemini Advanced subscribers and free-tier users.
Canvas: A New Collaborative Space
The Canvas feature is designed to facilitate collaboration between users and AI on various projects. By selecting the Canvas button next to the Deep Research option in Gemini’s interface, users can upload documents or lines of code. This action opens a sandbox environment where the AI generates a first draft based on the user’s prompt. Users can then refine the output, making edits and adjustments with the assistance of the AI chatbot.
Currently, Canvas supports document and coding tasks. For documents, users can upload a file and provide a prompt, such as “Create a speech based on these classroom notes.” The AI will then draft a response in the sandbox interface. Users have the flexibility to manually edit the text or request changes in tone or content based on specific feedback.
In coding scenarios, users can prompt the AI to write code, and Canvas allows them to generate and preview web app prototypes visually. This feature currently supports HTML and React code. After previewing, users can request modifications to input fields or call-to-action buttons, observing the updated results in real-time. While similar to OpenAI’s Canvas feature, Gemini’s version is accessible on both web and mobile platforms.
Audio Overview: Engaging Podcast-Like Discussions
Following the success of the Audio Overview feature in NotebookLM, Google is now integrating it into Gemini. This feature enables users to generate a podcast-style audio discussion based on documents, slides, and reports created using Deep Research. When a file meets the criteria, a floating action button (FAB) will appear on the Gemini platform, prompting users to engage with the feature. Upon tapping the FAB, Gemini generates an audio discussion featuring two AI hosts, one male and one female. These hosts engage in a dynamic conversation, exploring the topic and drawing connections between various subjects. The process may take a few minutes to complete, but it provides users with a unique auditory experience that enhances their understanding of the material.
Global Rollout and Accessibility
Both Canvas and Audio Overview features have been spotted on the web interface of Gemini, although they have yet to appear on mobile apps. Google is in the process of rolling out these features globally, which means it may take several days before all users can access them. As these tools become available, users can look forward to a more interactive and engaging experience on the Gemini platform.
