Google Unveils AI Mode for Enhanced Search

Google has launched a new artificial intelligence feature called AI Mode for its Search platform, aimed at providing deeper insights into complex queries. Initially tested internally, this feature is now available to a select group of users in the U.S. Alongside AI Mode, Google is also upgrading its AI Overviews with the advanced Gemini 2.0 model, enhancing the overall search experience.
Google Search Gets AI Mode
In a recent blog post, Google introduced AI Mode, designed to enhance the search experience by offering advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities. This feature expands upon the existing AI Overviews, allowing users to engage with more intricate queries that typically require multiple searches. Currently, AI Mode is accessible to a limited number of users through Google Labs as part of an early testing phase. Google plans to invite Google One AI Premium subscribers to participate in this experimental feature, although a broader rollout for general users has yet to be announced.
Eligible users who opt into the AI Mode will find it prominently displayed as a filter on the search results page, positioned above other options like All, Images, News, and Maps. After conducting a standard search, users can easily switch to AI Mode by selecting this filter. Powered by the custom Gemini 2.0 model, AI Mode is particularly beneficial for queries that demand in-depth exploration, comparisons, or reasoning. It supports follow-up questions and presents results in various formats, including images and tables, while also suggesting websites for further information.
The AI Mode employs a โquery fan-outโ technique, enabling it to conduct multiple related searches across various sub-topics simultaneously. By leveraging diverse data sources, such as web content and knowledge graphs, it aims to deliver comprehensive results in a user-friendly format. While Google asserts that AI Mode incorporates innovative methods to enhance response accuracy, it acknowledges the potential for some answers to reflect specific viewpoints. Users with access to the feature can provide feedback to help refine the tool, and Google has indicated that AI Mode will prioritize high-quality web search results in areas where it lacks confidence.
AI Overviews Upgraded With New AI Model
In addition to AI Mode, Google is enhancing its AI Overviews feature, which provides concise summaries of search results. The upgraded version will now utilize the Gemini 2.0 model, enabling it to tackle more complex inquiries related to coding, advanced mathematics, and multimodal queries. This new iteration of AI Overviews is currently available to users in the United States.
Furthermore, Google is expanding access to AI Overviews, making it available to teenagers using teen accounts. These AI-generated summaries will also be visible to users who are not signed into their Google accounts, broadening the reach of this feature. With these updates, Google aims to improve the search experience for a wider audience, ensuring that users can easily access relevant information in a clear and efficient manner.
