Google NotebookLM Unveils Mind Maps and Language Options

Google’s NotebookLM is enhancing user experience with the introduction of two significant features: Mind Maps and an output language selector. The Mind Maps feature allows users to visualize connections between concepts, while the language selector enables responses in users’ preferred languages. These updates come as part of a broader effort to improve interaction with the AI platform, which is now bundled with the Google One AI Premium subscription.

Mind Maps Feature Enhances Concept Visualization

Steven Johnson, Editorial Director of NotebookLM and Google Labs, announced the launch of the Mind Maps feature via a post on X (formerly Twitter). Initially available only to Workspace account holders, this feature is now accessible to all users. Johnson noted that generating a Mind Map takes approximately 20 seconds, making it a quick and efficient tool for users.

To create a Mind Map, users must first add one or more sources to their NotebookLM sheet. An option to generate Mind Maps appears in the Studio section of the page, marked by a purple map icon. Clicking this icon produces a flow chart that visually represents the concepts discussed in the selected sources.

The Mind Map interface opens in full-screen mode, displaying a branch-style layout where each concept is interconnected with related ideas. Users can zoom in and out of the map for better clarity. Additionally, tapping on any concept within the Mind Map minimizes the pop-up window and prompts the AI chatbot to provide further elaboration on that specific topic. Each response includes citations directly from the original sources, ensuring users have access to accurate information.

New Language Selector Expands Accessibility

In addition to Mind Maps, NotebookLM is introducing an output language selector, enhancing the platform’s accessibility for non-English speakers. This feature can be found in the settings menu located at the top right of the interface. Users can select their preferred output language for generated text, including study guides, briefing documents, and chat responses.

Even if the original sources and prompts are in a different language, the selected output language will be used for all generated content. However, it is important to note that the AI Overviews feature currently only supports English and will not be available in the chosen language.

While the Mind Maps feature is now widely available, the language selector is currently limited to Google Workspace users who access the platform through the Google One AI Premium subscription, as well as paid enterprise users. This targeted rollout aims to ensure that premium users receive the most advanced features available.
