Google Launches NotebookLM App for Android and iOS
Google has officially launched its standalone NotebookLM app for both Android and iOS devices, making it accessible to users after a pre-registration period. The app, which debuted on Monday, incorporates many of the core features found on the website version, though it does come with some limitations. Notably, the app introduces an exciting new feature called Audio Overviews, enhancing the user experience for those looking to organize and interact with their notes.
Features of the NotebookLM App
The NotebookLM app provides users with a streamlined interface that displays a list of their notebooks on the home page. Each notebook is automatically assigned an emoji based on the sources added, and users have the option to rename them for better organization. Currently, users can add various types of content, including PDFs, website URLs, YouTube links, and copied text. However, some features available on the website, such as audio files, markdown text, Google Docs, and Slides, are not yet supported in the app.
Despite these limitations, the app retains its most popular feature: Audio Overviews. This functionality allows users to generate AI-driven audio discussions based on the sources they have included in their notebooks. Users can access this feature by tapping the Studio option located at the bottom right of the screen. Testing by Gadgets 360 revealed that the audio file generation takes just a couple of minutes, providing a quick way to review content.
Offline Access and Interactive Features
One of the standout aspects of the Audio Overviews feature is the ability to download audio files for offline listening. While an active internet connection is typically required to play these audio discussions, downloading them allows users to access the content anytime, anywhere. Additionally, the app includes an interactive feature that enables users to “join” the audio discussion and pose questions to the AI hosts, making the experience more engaging and informative.
The NotebookLM app also offers other useful functionalities, such as topic summarization and the ability to chat with the AI for inquiries related to specific topics. However, features like study guide generation and MindMap creation are currently unavailable in this version of the app, which may limit some users’ experiences.
Subscription Options and Pricing
The NotebookLM app is free to download and use, but it also offers a paid subscription option for users seeking enhanced features. The subscription provides access to additional notebooks, more sources per notebook, and the Audio Overviews feature. Currently, access to NotebookLM Plus is linked to the Google One AI Premium subscription, which is priced at Rs. 1,950 per month. This tiered approach allows users to choose between a basic experience and a more comprehensive set of tools for their note-taking and study needs.
