Google is set to enhance the user experience on smartphones with the introduction of lock screen widgets, a feature previously available only on tablets. Announced during the company’s Spotlight Week, this update will be part of the upcoming Android 16 QPR1 release, expected to roll out in late Summer 2025. Unlocking Personalization: What Lock Screen Widgets Offer
The new lock screen widgets aim to provide users with a customizable experience, allowing them to access various functionalities directly from their device’s lock screen. According to Google, these widgets will enable users to check the time, set alarms, view critical information, and even manage smart home devices such as lights and thermostats. This feature is designed to streamline daily tasks and enhance convenience, making it easier for users to interact with their devices without needing to unlock them.
Google has emphasized that the lock screen widgets will be available through the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for both mobile devices and tablets. OEMs will have the option to use charging or docking status as triggers for displaying widgets. In terms of size, the widgets are expected to occupy approximately 4 x 3 cells on the launcher, although dimensions may vary depending on the device. They must adhere to the same quality guidelines established for home screen widgets, ensuring consistency in quality, sizing, and configuration across all devices.
Testing and Future Developments
Developers eager to test the new lock screen widgets will initially have access on Pixel Tablet devices, which received support following the Android 15 QPR2 update in December 2024. This early access allows developers to refine their widgets and ensure they meet the quality standards set by Google before the broader rollout with Android 16 QPR1.
