Google I/O Connect: Google Play Partners with Unity for Game Development

Google has unveiled an exciting new initiative aimed at empowering game developers in India. During the I/O Connect event on Wednesday, the tech giant announced the Google Play X Unity Game Developer Training programme, a free training and certification course developed in collaboration with Unity and supported by the Game Developer Association of India (GDAI). The programme will initially cater to 500 developers in partnership with the governments of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with plans for nationwide expansion. Additionally, Google introduced the second edition of the Gen AI Exchange Hackathon, building on the success of its previous generative AI initiatives.
Google and Unity Launch Game Developer Training Programme
At the Google I/O Connect event held in Bengaluru, Google revealed its partnership with Unity, a leading platform known for creating popular games such as Free Fire and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. This collaboration has led to the establishment of the Google Play X Unity Game Developer Training programme, which is designed to provide free certification for both aspiring and experienced game developers in India.
The programme, supported by the GDAI, offers over 30 hours of online training across three distinct learning tracks: Game Developer, Artist, and Programmer. This comprehensive training aims to equip participants with essential skills that are highly sought after in the gaming industry. Furthermore, it provides access to Unity’s official certifications, enhancing the credentials of those who complete the programme.
Google is launching this initiative with an initial cohort of 500 developers, working closely with the governments of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The tech giant has expressed its intention to expand the programme across India, building on the success of a similar initiative in Indonesia, which has already benefited 1,500 developers over the past three years.
Google Expands Gen AI Upskilling Initiatives
In addition to the game developer training, Google has emphasized the growth of its Gen AI Exchange Programme, which was introduced in May. This initiative aims to enhance the skills of Indian developers in the field of generative AI. Since its launch, the programme has garnered over 270,000 registrations, showcasing significant interest and engagement from the developer community.
Google reports that the Gen AI Exchange Programme has reached a total of 5.3 million users across various platforms, with 30,000 course completions achieved within just three months. This impressive response highlights the demand for upskilling in generative AI technologies among Indian developers.
To further capitalize on this momentum, Google has announced the second edition of the Gen AI Exchange Hackathon. This event will challenge developers to apply their AI expertise to tackle real-world problems, referred to as ‘Million Dollar Problem Statements,’ presented by leading industry figures. The hackathon aims to foster innovation and collaboration among developers while addressing pressing challenges in the tech landscape.
