Google Expands Identity Check Feature to More Devices

Google is set to broaden the reach of its Identity Check security feature, which is currently available on select Samsung and Google Pixel smartphones. This feature aims to safeguard user data and Google accounts from potential breaches, particularly in the event of a phone theft. When activated, it mandates biometric authentication for any modifications to critical settings, enhancing overall device security. This move comes in response to similar offerings from Apple, which introduced its Stolen Device Protection feature with the iOS 17.3 update last year.
Identity Check Launches on OnePlus 13 with Android 16 Beta
Recent reports from Android Authority reveal that the Identity Check feature has been spotted on the OnePlus 13 following the installation of the Android 16 beta release. This security enhancement mirrors the functionality introduced by Google in a previous Pixel Drop (Android 15 QPR1) that was rolled out in December 2024. Samsung also integrated the Identity Check feature into its devices with the Android 15-based One UI 7 update.
The code from Android 15 QPR1 will be incorporated into Android 16, indicating that other smartphones, including the OnePlus 13, will gain access to the Identity Check feature upon their update to Android 16. Additionally, new smartphones launching with Android 16 pre-installed are expected to come equipped with this feature as well. However, it is important to note that devices must support class 3 biometric authentication to utilize Identity Check.
Once the feature is available, users can enable it by navigating to Settings > Google > Theft Protection > Use Identity Check. When activated, the smartphone will require biometric verification for sensitive actions, especially when outside of designated “trusted” locations. This includes accessing passkeys, app passwords, changing the device’s PIN, or disabling the Find My Device feature.
Enhanced Security for Google Accounts
The Identity Check feature not only secures sensitive device settings but also fortifies Google accounts against unauthorized access. It complicates efforts by thieves or malicious users to gain control of a user’s Google account, even if they have memorized the owner’s passcode. Users have the option to disable Identity Check, but this action also necessitates biometric authentication. Alternatively, users can turn off the feature through their Google account, although this requires an internet connection.
Apple’s Stolen Device Protection, introduced with the iOS 17.3 update in January 2024, offers similar safeguards. This feature mandates biometric authentication for changes to sensitive settings and is available on all iPhone models running iOS 17.3 or later. The anticipated rollout of Google’s Identity Check feature to a wider array of Android smartphones will provide enhanced security measures to a larger number of users in the upcoming months.
