Gold Prices Today: Significant Decline in Yellow Metal
Gold prices experienced a significant decline on Monday, driven by a stronger dollar and cautious investor sentiment ahead of critical U.S. economic data. The drop in prices reflects concerns among traders regarding upcoming indicators such as retail sales, producer price index (PPI), jobless claims, and GDP data, all of which could influence the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions in December. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), December gold futures fell by Rs 1,477, or 1.19%, settling at Rs 1,22,714 per 10 grams, while silver also saw a decrease.
The global market dynamics have played a crucial role in the recent downturn of gold prices. The dollar index has remained strong, consistently staying above the 100-mark, which is its highest level in nearly six months. This strength in the dollar has limited the appeal of precious metals, including gold and silver. On the Comex, December gold futures dropped by 0.95% to $4,076.90 per ounce, while silver fell by 0.74% to $49.54 per ounce. Analysts have noted that the market is now pricing in a nearly 70% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut by the Federal Reserve next month, a significant increase from around 40% just a week prior. This shift follows indications from U.S. Federal Reserve officials expressing support for further easing of monetary policy.
City-wise Gold Prices
In the domestic market, gold prices have shown a downward trend across various cities. In Delhi, the price for 24K gold is now Rs 12,528 per gram, while 22K gold is priced at Rs 11,485 per gram, and 18K gold at Rs 9,400 per gram. These figures represent declines of Rs 71, Rs 65, and Rs 53, respectively, compared to the previous day. Similarly, in Mumbai, 24K gold is priced at Rs 12,513 per gram, with 22K at Rs 11,470 and 18K at Rs 9,385, all reflecting the same decrease.
In Bengaluru, the rates mirror those in Mumbai, with 24K gold at Rs 12,513 per gram, 22K at Rs 11,470, and 18K at Rs 9,385. Chennai reported a slightly higher price for 24K gold at Rs 12,567 per gram, while 22K and 18K gold are priced at Rs 11,520 and Rs 9,610, respectively. The declines in Chennai were more pronounced, with 24K gold falling by Rs 121. Other cities, including Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Pune, and Kanpur, also reported similar price drops across all categories of gold.
Investor Sentiment and Future Outlook
Investor sentiment remains cautious as traders await the release of key economic data this week. The upcoming reports on U.S. retail sales, PPI, jobless claims, and GDP are expected to provide insights into the health of the economy and could significantly influence the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decisions. As a result, many investors are adopting a wait-and-see approach, which is contributing to the current volatility in gold prices.
The outlook for gold in the near term will largely depend on the economic indicators released and the subsequent reactions from the Federal Reserve. If the data suggests a need for further monetary easing, it could potentially support gold prices. Conversely, continued strength in the dollar and a lack of supportive economic data may keep gold under pressure. As the market navigates these uncertainties, traders will be closely monitoring developments to make informed decisions.
