India’s semiconductor design sector is facing a significant downturn, with job openings in Global Capability Centers (GCCs) dropping nearly 15% year-on-year for the financial year 2024-25. A report by talent solutions provider Careernet reveals that the number of available positions peaked at 3,760 in May 2024 but fell to 3,040 by January 2025, ultimately closing the fiscal year at 3,181 openings in March 2025. This decline is attributed to ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions in global supply chains, impacting hiring trends across the industry.

Job Market Trends in Semiconductor Design

The semiconductor design sector in India has shown a marked slowdown in hiring, particularly within its top 50 GCCs. The report from Careernet indicates that the decline in job openings reflects broader economic challenges, including geopolitical uncertainties and supply chain issues. The peak of job openings in May 2024 suggests a brief period of optimism, but the subsequent drop highlights the volatility in the market. By January 2025, the number of job openings had decreased significantly, indicating a cautious approach to hiring among companies in this specialized field.

Despite the overall decline, certain areas within semiconductor design continue to show resilience. Demand for specialized skills, particularly in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI), embedded systems, and RF/analogue design, remains stable. Mid-sized GCCs have demonstrated a greater ability to adapt to these niche demands, suggesting that while the market is contracting, opportunities still exist for skilled professionals in specific areas.
