Gemini Soars to App Store Peak with Launch of AI Image Model, Nano Banana

Gemini’s mobile app has experienced remarkable growth following the launch of its Nano Banana image editor model in August. Users have praised the app for its ability to simplify complex edits and produce realistic images. Recent data from app intelligence firm Appfigures reveals that Gemini has surged to the top of global app store charts, achieving a staggering 45% increase in downloads month-over-month in September alone.
The app has already amassed 12.6 million downloads this month, a significant rise from 8.7 million in August. This impressive performance marks a notable milestone for Gemini, which previously peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. App Store in January 2025. Following the release of Nano Banana, Gemini climbed to the No. 2 spot on September 8 and reached the coveted No. 1 position on September 12, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Currently, no other dedicated AI applications are listed in the top 10 on the App Store.
Rapid Rise in Popularity
Gemini’s ascent in the app rankings has been swift and significant. After its launch, the app quickly gained traction, becoming one of the top five iPhone apps in 108 countries worldwide. The surge in popularity is attributed to the innovative features of the Nano Banana model, which have attracted a broader audience. On Google Play, Gemini also made impressive strides, moving from No. 26 to No. 2 in the U.S. app rankings by September 8. However, ChatGPT continues to hold the top position on the Android platform.
Google has actively promoted Gemini’s growth, highlighting that the app has attracted 23 million first-time users since the introduction of the Nano Banana model. These users have collectively shared over 500 million images, showcasing the app’s appeal and functionality. The increase in user engagement has contributed to a notable rise in consumer spending on the app.
Surge in Revenue Generation
The financial impact of Gemini’s growth is evident in its revenue figures. This year, the app has generated $6.3 million on iOS devices, with $1.6 million earned in August alone, largely attributed to the launch of the Nano Banana model. This represents a staggering 1,291% increase from January’s revenue of $115,000, according to Appfigures. The app is on track to match or exceed its August revenue in September, having already generated $792,000 in the first half of the month.
Overall, Gemini has achieved a remarkable total of 103.7 million downloads this year, with a cumulative total of 185.4 million downloads since its launch on Android in February 2024 and subsequent expansion to iOS later that year. The app’s rapid growth trajectory suggests a promising future as it continues to attract users and generate revenue.
