Gaza Faces Critical Fuel Shortage Crisis

United Nations Issues Urgent Warning About Life-Threatening Situation

New York, Geneva, Rome, Gaza – The United Nations has issued a serious warning: Gaza is running dangerously low on fuel, creating a crisis that threatens the lives of 2.1 million people.

Fuel is essential for basic survival in Gaza. It powers hospitals and medical equipment, water treatment plants, sewage systems, ambulances, food delivery trucks, and bakeries that make bread for families. Without fuel, these critical services cannot operate, leaving millions of people without access to basic necessities.

After nearly two years of war, people in Gaza are already struggling with severe food shortages. The fuel crisis makes this situation much worse. When fuel runs out, hospitals lose power and go dark, maternity wards and intensive care units stop working, and ambulances cannot respond to emergencies. Water systems shut down, leaving families without clean drinking water, while bakeries cannot make bread. Waste and sewage pile up in the streets, and phone and internet services fail, cutting off communication between families and emergency services.

The health and safety risks are severe. Without fuel, Gaza faces a complete breakdown of medical care as hospitals cannot treat patients. Families risk drinking contaminated water, leading to disease outbreaks from poor sanitation. The situation pushes people closer to starvation as food cannot be produced or delivered. Communication systems break down, preventing families from contacting each other or receiving critical emergency information.

This week, for the first time in 130 days, a small amount of fuel entered Gaza. While this is positive news, it is only a tiny fraction of what is needed daily to keep essential services running. The delivery represents just a small step toward addressing the massive fuel shortage that continues to threaten the population.

The United Nations and humanitarian organizations stress that this situation is extremely urgent. They are calling for fuel to be allowed into Gaza in sufficient amounts, with consistent deliveries to maintain life-saving operations. Without immediate action to prevent a complete collapse of essential services, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis will worsen dramatically, putting millions of lives at risk. The UN says urgent action is needed now to prevent a complete breakdown of essential services that keep people alive.
