George Saunders was born on 2 December 1958 (age 65 years), in Amarillo, Texas, United States. He grew up in a working-class family and attended Oak Forest High School in Oak Forest, Illinois.
Saunders earned a degree in exploration geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines in 1981. Later, he pursued an M.A. in creative writing from Syracuse University.
After completing his education, Saunders worked as a technical writer and a geophysical engineer in Sumatra, Saudi Arabia, and Colorado. He started writing fiction while working in these technical fields.
Saunders gained recognition for his unique style characterized by a blend of satire, dark humor, and social commentary. His debut collection of short stories, “CivilWarLand in Bad Decline,” was published in 1996 and received critical acclaim.
