Foxconn to Boost iPhone Production in India

Foxconn is set to significantly increase its iPhone production in India, aiming to ramp up from 12 million units in 2024 to as many as 30 million this year. This move aligns with Apple’s strategy to diversify its supply chain, which may soon include the production of AirPods, iPads, and MacBooks in the country. The company is currently conducting production trials at its Bengaluru facility to ensure it meets Apple’s high standards.
Production Trials Underway in Bengaluru
According to a report from The Economic Times, Foxconn has initiated limited production trials at its Bengaluru campus. These trials represent the first step in the company’s ambitious plan to enhance its iPhone manufacturing capabilities in India. During this phase, Foxconn is assessing whether the Bengaluru facility can produce iPhones while adhering to Apple’s rigorous quality standards, even at a large scale.
In 2024, Foxconn successfully assembled approximately 12 million iPhones in India. The company now aims to increase this figure to between 25 million and 30 million units. This expansion is expected to be supported by recent tax cuts on smartphone component imports announced in the Union Budget, which will help reduce production costs.
Once the trial phase concludes, Foxconn will transition to the “revenue build” stage, allowing for the shipment of iPhones manufactured at the Bengaluru site. This strategic move is part of Foxconn’s broader efforts to enhance its manufacturing footprint in India and meet the growing demand for iPhones in the region.
Apple’s Hiring Surge and Future Plans
In tandem with Foxconn’s production ramp-up, Apple is reportedly increasing its hiring efforts in India. This hiring surge is part of Apple’s plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities in the country, potentially including the production of iPads, MacBooks, and AirPods. Apple has been assembling iPhones in India since 2017, and this latest development underscores the company’s commitment to strengthening its supply chain resilience.
By diversifying its manufacturing locations, Apple aims to reduce its reliance on China, a strategy that has become increasingly important amid global supply chain disruptions. The company’s focus on India not only enhances its operational flexibility but also positions it to better serve the growing demand for its products in the Indian market.
