Foxconn Delivers 97% of India’s iPhone Exports to US Market

Nearly all iPhones exported by Foxconn from India between March and May 2025 were shipped to the United States, according to customs data. This significant shift, which saw 97 percent of exports directed to the U.S., highlights Apple’s strategy to circumvent high tariffs imposed on Chinese imports. The data, reported by Reuters, reveals a dramatic realignment of Apple’s export strategy, moving away from a more diverse distribution to countries like the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.
Record Exports to the U.S.
During the March to May period, Foxconn exported iPhones valued at $3.2 billion from India, with nearly all shipments destined for the U.S. This marks a stark increase compared to the 2024 average, where only 50.3 percent of exports went to the U.S. In May 2025 alone, shipments to the U.S. reached nearly $1 billion, making it the second-highest monthly total after March’s record of $1.3 billion. This trend underscores Apple’s commitment to increasing its production capabilities in India while navigating the complexities of international trade tariffs.
Apple’s Strategic Shift
Apple’s decision to ramp up production in India comes as the company seeks to mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports. The company has taken proactive measures, including chartering planes to expedite the transport of various iPhone models to the U.S. In March, Apple reportedly shipped iPhones worth approximately $2 billion from India. Additionally, the company has engaged with Indian airport authorities to significantly reduce customs clearance times at Chennai airport, a crucial hub for iPhone exports. These efforts reflect Apple’s broader strategy to enhance its manufacturing footprint in India.
Future Projections and Market Dynamics
Analysts predict that by 2025, iPhones manufactured in India could account for 25 to 30 percent of global shipments, up from 18 percent in 2024. This projection indicates a growing reliance on Indian production as Apple continues to adapt to changing market conditions. Tata Electronics, another key player in Apple’s supply chain, has also shown a strong inclination towards U.S. exports, with 86 percent of its shipments directed to the U.S. during March and April. However, the company only began exporting iPhones in July 2024, highlighting the rapid growth of India’s role in Apple’s supply chain.
Challenges in Indian Manufacturing
Despite the positive outlook for iPhone production in India, challenges remain. High import duties on mobile phone components compared to other countries continue to hinder the cost-effectiveness of manufacturing in India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has actively promoted the country as a manufacturing hub for smartphones, but the existing tariff structure poses significant obstacles. Historically, Apple has sold over 60 million iPhones annually in the U.S., with a majority of these devices produced in China. As Apple navigates these complexities, the company’s evolving strategy in India will be crucial for its future growth in the global smartphone market.
