Former Thai Police Chief Found Dead in Jail

Thitisan Utthanaphon, a former Thai police chief serving a life sentence for the torture and murder of a drug suspect, has been discovered dead in his Bangkok prison cell. Preliminary autopsy results suggest he died by suicide, but his family has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death. An investigation has been launched by Thailand’s justice ministry to determine the exact cause of death.

Controversial Background and Viral Video

Thitisan, known as “Joe Ferrari” due to his collection of luxury cars, gained notoriety in 2021 when a shocking video surfaced. The footage showed him and his colleagues suffocating 24-year-old drug suspect Jirapong Thanapat with plastic bags during an interrogation, ultimately leading to the suspect’s death. The incident ignited widespread outrage across Thailand, highlighting issues of police brutality and corruption within the force. Following the video’s release, Thitisan was arrested after a manhunt and subsequently sentenced to life in prison.

Investigation into Circumstances of Death

In light of Thitisan’s death, the justice ministry has initiated an investigation, particularly after his family expressed skepticism regarding the suicide ruling. Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong emphasized the need for transparency, urging prison authorities to cooperate fully with investigators. The family has claimed that Thitisan was previously assaulted by prison staff and reported that they were not allowed to see his body after it was discovered. However, authorities have stated that no prison personnel or inmates were involved in his death.

Concerns Over Prison Conditions

The Department of Corrections has acknowledged ongoing investigations into complaints made by Thitisan’s family regarding alleged bullying and assaults by prison officers. Reports indicate that Thitisan had been experiencing anxiety and sleep issues, for which he sought medical advice. On the day of his death, his family visited him, and prison staff reported no unusual behavior. The investigation aims to clarify these troubling allegations and ensure accountability within the prison system.

Legacy of Controversy

Thitisan’s case remains a focal point in discussions about police conduct in Thailand. Alongside him, five other officers were convicted for their roles in Jirapong’s murder and received life sentences in 2022. The fallout from this case continues to resonate, with Jirapong’s father expressing a sense of closure, stating, “It’s like he has paid off the karma he committed.” As the investigation unfolds, the implications for Thailand’s justice system and police accountability are likely to be significant.
