First Meeting of Task Force on Textiles Exports Held

The inaugural meeting of the Task Force on Textiles Exports took place on June 10, 2025, at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi, chaired by Commerce Secretary Shri Sunil Barthwal. The gathering aimed to address critical issues and devise strategies to boost India’s textiles exports. With a focus on collaboration among stakeholders, the Task Force seeks to enhance India’s presence in the global textiles market, drawing on the sector’s rich heritage and potential for innovation.
Objectives and Vision of the Task Force
During the meeting, Shri Sunil Barthwal emphasized the Task Force’s primary goal: to establish a unified platform for tackling pressing challenges in the textiles sector. He highlighted the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, including government officials, industry representatives, and export councils. Barthwal noted that the Indian textiles sector has a storied history, and it is crucial to harness this legacy while adapting to contemporary market demands. The Task Force aims to formulate effective strategies that will significantly increase India’s share of textiles exports in the global marketplace.
Focus on Innovation and Trade Agreements
Special Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Shri Rajesh Agrawal, underscored the necessity of innovation in the textiles industry to capture a larger share of the export market. He pointed out that staying attuned to the latest trends is vital for success. Additionally, Special Secretary Shri L Satya Srinivas remarked that textiles are a key focus area for the Department of Commerce. He mentioned ongoing efforts to negotiate trade agreements that would alleviate tariff disadvantages for Indian exporters. The industry, he noted, must develop plans to leverage these agreements effectively. Additional Secretary Shri Rohit Kansal also discussed various initiatives from the Textiles Ministry, such as the PM MITRA scheme, aimed at bolstering the domestic textiles industry.
Comprehensive Discussions on Value Chain Issues
The meeting addressed a wide range of topics related to the textiles value chain, including labor skills, cost competitiveness, and the use of renewable energy. Participants discussed the importance of sustainability and the scale of manufacturing in enhancing productivity. Current government schemes supporting the textiles sector were also reviewed, alongside Quality Control Orders and logistics challenges. The promotion of Geographical Indication (GI) products and the productivity enhancement of natural fibers, such as jute, were highlighted as critical areas for development. The Department of Commerce is also setting up an Export Promotion Mission to further support these initiatives.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Goals
The meeting concluded with a commitment to collaboration among various stakeholders. Representatives from textiles export promotion councils and industry associations shared their insights and suggestions. It was decided that sub-task forces would be established, led by relevant ministries, to work on specific issues and provide recommendations to the Task Force. The overarching goal is to create a roadmap to achieve textiles export targets of USD 100 billion by the fiscal year 2030-31, aligning with the broader Viksit Bharat Vision for 2047. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that India strengthens its position in the global textiles market while fostering sustainable growth within the sector.
