First Meeting of Task Force on Textiles Exports Held

The inaugural meeting of the Task Force on Textiles Exports took place on June 10, 2025, at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi, chaired by Commerce Secretary Shri Sunil Barthwal. This initiative aims to enhance India’s textiles exports by fostering collaboration among various stakeholders in the sector. The meeting addressed critical issues across the textile value chain, focusing on strategies to boost India’s presence in global markets.

Objectives of the Task Force

The establishment of the Textiles Task Force is designed to create a cohesive platform for tackling significant challenges within the textile industry. By bringing together stakeholders from various sectors, the task force aims to facilitate active collaboration and develop effective strategies to increase India’s share of textile exports globally. This initiative is crucial for addressing the complexities of the textile value chain, which encompasses everything from production to export.

Key Discussion Points

During the meeting, participants discussed a wide range of topics affecting the textile sector. Key issues included upgrading Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) infrastructure in garment manufacturing, the adoption of renewable energy, and compliance with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The discussions also highlighted the need to strengthen e-commerce initiatives for export growth, simplify regulatory frameworks, and enhance labor productivity through cost competitiveness and skilling programs.

Additional topics included suggestions for Interest Subvention Schemes, assistance for certification and testing, and collateral support for export credit aimed at Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The meeting also touched on the Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoDTEP), the PM MITRA Parks initiative, and the development of new Jute Diversified Products (JDPs). Participants emphasized the importance of creating separate Harmonized System (HS) codes for Geographical Indication (GI) products and enhancing the productivity of natural fibers like jute.

Stakeholder Engagement

The meeting saw participation from various officials, including Special Secretaries and Additional Secretaries from the Department of Commerce and the Ministry of Textiles. Representatives from Export Promotion Councils, industry associations, and exporters contributed their insights and suggestions on the discussed issues. This collaborative approach is intended to ensure that the task force’s strategies are well-informed and actionable.

As a result of the discussions, it was decided to form relevant sub-task forces to address specific issues. Each sub-task force will be led by the corresponding ministry and will include participants from Export Promotion Councils and industry representatives. This structure aims to provide actionable recommendations to the main Task Force, reinforcing the commitment to achieving the textiles export targets and aligning with the Viksit Bharat Vision for 2047.

Future Directions

The meeting concluded with a strong commitment from all participants to work together towards a comprehensive roadmap for enhancing textiles exports. The collaborative efforts of the Task Force and its sub-groups are expected to play a pivotal role in overcoming existing challenges and seizing new opportunities in the global textile market. By focusing on innovation, sustainability, and strategic partnerships, the Task Force aims to position India as a leading player in the textiles sector on the world stage.
