Final Stage of Preparations for ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ Under Union
Under the guidance of Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, preparations are nearing completion for the launch of the ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan.’ This ambitious nationwide initiative is set to commence on May 29 from the revered city of Puri, Odisha. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with state governments, are actively involved in the planning and execution of this significant campaign, which aims to enhance agricultural productivity and support farmers across the country.
Campaign Objectives and Vision
Shri Chouhan articulated his commitment to serving farmers and emphasized the campaign’s goals of boosting agricultural production, lowering production costs, and ensuring food security. He highlighted the importance of balanced fertilizer use, understanding local agricultural conditions, and leveraging research insights to improve productivity. The Minister believes that these strategies will empower farmers to achieve better yields and contribute to the nation’s food supply. He stated, “Farming is a matter of heart and emotion and it must be lived,” underscoring the emotional connection many have with agriculture.
The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan is designed to foster collaboration among scientists, agricultural officials, and farmers, addressing a gap that has long existed in the agricultural sector. By integrating these groups, the campaign aims to create a more cohesive approach to agricultural development, ensuring that scientific advancements are effectively translated into practical applications for farmers.
Government Commitment to Agricultural Research
During his address, Shri Chouhan reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing agricultural research under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s leadership. He assured that funding for research and innovation would not be a constraint. The Minister described the initiative as a result-oriented program, expressing confidence that its benefits would be evident by the upcoming Kharif season. He encouraged scientists to showcase their research on a global platform, asserting that India’s agricultural institutions possess the capability to gain international recognition.
The session included participation from key figures such as Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and Dr. M.L. Jat, Secretary of DARE and Director General of ICAR. Their involvement highlights the collaborative effort behind the campaign, which aims to engage a wide network of agricultural experts and institutions.
Focus on Demand-Driven Research
Dr. Jat emphasized the need for demand-driven research to enhance agricultural efficiency. He pointed out that the campaign seeks to bridge the gap between research and practical application, promoting farmer-led innovations for sustainable growth. The shift from supply-driven to demand-driven research is crucial, as it ensures that scientific advancements meet the actual needs of farmers. Dr. Jat noted that the challenge lies in effectively communicating agricultural research in practical terms that farmers can understand and utilize.
The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan is scheduled to take place from May 29 to June 12, 2025, across more than 700 districts. A team of scientists will engage directly with farmers, aiming to reach approximately 15 million individuals. This extensive outreach will involve participation from 731 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), 113 ICAR institutes, and various state-level agricultural departments, ensuring a comprehensive approach to agricultural development.
Engagement and Participation
The campaign’s structure is designed to facilitate direct interaction between scientists and farmers, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange. Shri Chaturvedi highlighted that even a slight increase in productivity across India’s 210 million hectares of net cropped area could significantly enhance overall agricultural output. This initiative aims to harness the potential of agricultural research and innovation to improve the livelihoods of farmers.
The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan represents a significant step towards transforming India’s agricultural landscape. By focusing on collaboration, research, and direct engagement with farmers, the campaign seeks to create a sustainable and productive agricultural sector that can meet the challenges of the future. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Director of the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, concluded the session with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective efforts of all participants in this vital initiative.
