Expansion of Navodaya Vidyalayas Across India

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs) in districts that currently lack these institutions. The establishment of these 28 Navodaya Vidyalayas comes with a substantial financial commitment. The total estimated cost for this project is approximately Rs. 2,359.82 crore. This funding will be allocated over a five-year period, from 2024-25 to 2028-29. The capital expenditure is projected to be around Rs. 1,944.19 crore, while the operational expenditure will account for Rs. 415.63 crore. This financial investment reflects the government’s dedication to improving educational infrastructure in underserved areas.
The administrative framework for these new NVs will include the creation of various posts to ensure smooth operations. Each Navodaya Vidyalaya will have the capacity to accommodate 560 students, benefiting a total of 15,680 children across the newly established schools. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to create direct employment opportunities for 1,316 individuals, as each NV typically employs around 47 staff members. The construction and related activities will also generate jobs for skilled and unskilled workers, contributing to local economies.
Educational Opportunities for Rural Students
Navodaya Vidyalayas are known for their unique educational model. These fully residential, co-educational schools provide high-quality modern education from Class VI to XII. They primarily cater to talented children from rural areas, regardless of their family’s financial background. Admissions to these schools are based on a Selection Test, ensuring that deserving students have access to quality education. Each year, approximately 49,640 students are admitted to Class VI across the existing NVs.
Currently, there are 661 sanctioned Navodaya Vidyalayas in India, with 653 of them operational. Approximately 42% of the students are girls, while 24% belong to Scheduled Castes (SC), 20% to Scheduled Tribes (ST), and 39% to Other Backward Classes (OBC). The performance of Navodaya Vidyalaya students in board examinations has consistently outshined other educational institutions.
