ESIC Introduces SPREE 2025 to Enhance Social Security Coverage

The Employeesโ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has launched a new initiative called SPREE 2025, aimed at enhancing social security coverage for unregistered employers and employees. This scheme was approved during the 196th ESI Corporation Meeting in Shimla, chaired by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Labour & Employment. SPREE 2025 will run from July 1 to December 31, 2025, allowing employers and employees, including temporary and contractual workers, to register without the fear of inspections or past dues.
Overview of SPREE 2025
SPREE 2025, or the Scheme for Promotion of Registration of Employers and Employees, is designed to broaden the reach of social security under the ESI Act. The initiative provides a unique opportunity for unregistered employers and employees to enroll in the system without facing penalties for previous non-compliance. This scheme is particularly beneficial for those who have not registered their businesses or employees due to fears of legal repercussions or financial liabilities. By eliminating these concerns, SPREE 2025 aims to encourage more employers to participate in the ESI program, thereby enhancing the overall social security framework.
Registration Process and Benefits
Employers can easily register their units and employees through the ESIC portal, Shram Suvidha, and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) portal. The registration will be effective from the date specified by the employer, ensuring that there are no contributions or benefits applicable for any period prior to registration. Importantly, the scheme guarantees that there will be no inspections or demands for past records during the pre-registration period. This streamlined process is designed to promote voluntary compliance and make it easier for businesses to adhere to social security regulations.
Encouraging Compliance and Expanding Coverage
Before the introduction of SPREE 2025, employers faced potential legal actions and demands for backdated dues if they failed to register within specified timeframes. The new scheme addresses these challenges by providing a safe harbor for employers, thus encouraging them to regularize their workforce. By simplifying the registration process and removing the fear of retrospective penalties, SPREE 2025 aims to bring more establishments and workers into the ESI system. This initiative is expected to significantly increase social protection for workers, particularly those in contractual and temporary positions.
Commitment to Social Protection
The launch of SPREE 2025 represents a significant advancement by the Employeesโ State Insurance Corporation in promoting inclusive social security. By making the registration process more accessible and offering immunity from past liabilities, the scheme not only supports employers in regularizing their workforce but also ensures that a larger number of workers gain access to essential health and social benefits under the ESI Act. ESIC is dedicated to enhancing its outreach and fulfilling its mission of universal social protection, aligning with the broader vision of creating a welfare-centric labor ecosystem in India.
