ESIC Enhances Healthcare Services Through IT Upgrades

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is making significant strides in improving its healthcare services. Under the leadership of Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, ESIC is focused on enhancing medical services and upgrading its IT systems. This initiative aims to provide better healthcare delivery mechanisms and improve the overall experience for beneficiaries. The ongoing monitoring of these advancements by the Union Minister underscores the commitment to modernizing healthcare in India.

Increased Use of the Dhanwantari Application

The Dhanwantari Hospital Information System (HIS) has seen a remarkable increase in adoption across ESIC hospitals and dispensaries. The usage of this application has grown by 40%, allowing healthcare providers to manage patient care and hospital operations more effectively. The Dhanwantari Module, which is part of this system, provides better access to patient records and previous case histories. This ensures that healthcare providers can deliver improved patient care.

Since the beginning of the current financial year, the total number of transactions processed through the Dhanwantari Module has surged by 50%. This growth reflects the system’s increasing reliability and efficiency. In September 2024, the number of concurrent users increased tenfold, resulting in a significant reduction in reported incidents. The total incidents reported dropped to just 93 for an impressive 1.5 crore transactions. This indicates that the system is not only handling a larger volume of transactions but is also doing so with greater stability and fewer issues.

Upgraded IT Infrastructure

ESIC has undertaken a comprehensive upgrade of its IT infrastructure. This includes enhancements to hardware, middleware, software, and network systems. The upgrades aim to make the system faster, more secure, and user-friendly for all stakeholders involved. The improved infrastructure facilitates hassle-free registration and contribution deposits, promoting ease of doing business.

The transition to this upgraded environment was successfully completed on December 22, 2024. This upgrade is part of an ongoing Operations and Maintenance contract with the current System Integrator, costing a total of Rs. 312 crores over three years. With enhanced connectivity and security, the new systems are designed to support the growing demands of ESIC’s services. This modernization effort is crucial for ensuring that ESIC can continue to provide high-quality healthcare services to its beneficiaries.

Enhanced Mobile App and Appointment System

The ESIC mobile app has undergone significant improvements to enhance user experience. These upgrades include additional features that make it easier for users to navigate the app. One of the most notable changes is the online appointment booking system, which has experienced remarkable growth. From 2022 to 2023, online bookings increased by 200%, followed by another 177% increase from 2023 to 2024.

These enhancements allow employers, insured workers, and beneficiaries to enjoy faster response times and seamless interactions with ESIC services. Users can now book appointments online more easily, whether at hospitals or through digital platforms. This shift towards a more digital approach reflects ESIC’s commitment to improving operational efficiency and the overall experience for its users.
